AirPods connected when lid closed

I’ve recently started to have my AirPods (left) connect to my iPhone continuously.

I’ve removed and re-added the AirPods and same issue. I’ve had the left and AirPod case replaced under warranty already. I made a genius appointment for this but afraid the same issue will happen when my warranty runs out.

anyone else have this issue.
