When I first acquired my AirPods a few years ago, they would automatically connect to the last device I used them with, and the audio would be transferred to them automatically. However, at some point this stopped, and now I have to go into control center and set the audio destination to be the AirPods.

Was this a change in iOS 13? Does anyone's AirPods still connect and transfer the audio automatically? I'm wondering why this may have stopped, and if there's a way to enable it again.

that never worked for me to be honest. I always have to manually switch between my iPad and iPhone. It always remembers the wrong one

I use mine exclusively, except for one or two instances, with my Apple Watch, and several times a day. If I don’t bring up control center on the watch to select them the connection fails at least 50% of the time. It was this way before 13 but got considerably worse after, so now I make certain to select them first in control center before starting any audio.

They used to automatically switch? They’ve never done so for me, I’ve always had to do it manually. Not sure what the W1 chip buys over regular Bluetooth

Your initial behavior has always been the case for me, and still is with iOS 13.

That being said, in about 1 year of ownership there were a couple of times that I had connection glitches, which were fixed by "forgetting" the AirPods in all* Apple devices and then re-pairing them with the case button. So you might give that a try.

* It is important to do this in all of them, or else the old corrupted pairing can "helpfully" migrate back to other Apple devices on their own.

From time to time my AirPods disconnects from my phone and refuses to reconnect unless I put them back in the case for a minute and then bring out again.

That’s what works for me as well. But first I do have pull up control center, on my watch, and use the Air Play icon to select the Air Pods or the connection fails at least half the time. I only use the pods with my watch a couple times every day but still need to do this Each time. And every now and then that doesn’t work and back in the charge case they go.

Luckily for me my AirPods connect automatically to the last device I used.

What I hope very much for the future is that Apple adds a feature where the AirPods automatically connect to the nearest device/the device you are using right now. I guess there's a lot of fine tuning involved in order not to get a lot of false positives but I guess with Apple's ultra wideband tech and some smart software implementation that should work.

I’m using AirPods (Pro model now) and beats headphones on many devices (MBP, iPad Pro and iPhone) and fortunately everything works as expected.
I had some minor glitches , AirPods related mostly, but every time it just needs to put them in the case to reset everything.
