And even then you are missing 95% of the features and battery life of the Sony and Bose equivalents. These headphones (incl 1st gen) prove Apple sheep still exist. One of the worst tech products of the last decade.

You're not really missing anything with the APMs, at any price above about $300

Best Buy will match this price. I bought one for the wife as a Mother's Day gift to match her Orange iPhone 17 Pro Max. I wanted her to get the B&W Px7 S3 or Sony WH-1000 XM6, but the color appeal for the wife was more important. The difference in sound quality for her would be negligible.

I have been using my OG AirPod pro max for years at the gym. 5 out of 7 days they get used. The speaker finally crapped out (due to condensation) and I really had a hard time justifying the price for what they are. Picked up some Bose QC ultra 2. Gotta say I’m pleasantly surprised how good they sound and how comfortable they are for gym use. Not sure I’d go back to the pro max. At least not in the current form factor.

I love my USB-C iteration of the APM and they're by far the best headphones I've ever owned -- compared to Beats, Bose, and Sony. But I've thought about picking up the Bose QC on sale solely to travel with because they fold up (I don't check bags).

I have the first version but I very rarely use it as the sound on the AirPods Pro 3 is so close to the Max that I don't bother. I am not an audiophile though.
