jn dialysis at the moment and using my APP2s. I did bring over ear headphones for comparison’s sale - but there is no compariso; my head just feels weighed down after a few minutes. I know it’s psychological and these over ears that I’m using today are Skullcandy ANC Crushers. It doesn’t help that the noise cancelling isn’t as good as with the APP2s; which just adds to my discomfort.

Looking st using them for 4-6 hours at a go, either in dialysis or perhsps a bit longer at home.

I’m assuming, perhaps incorrectly that the noise cancelling and spatial audio will be equivalent to the quality of the APP2s?

thanks for any opinions.

Tom

It really depends on the shape and size of your head. I seem to have the perfect APM head and many users agree that the headband should be the standard for all big headphones moving forward. I do not feel the weight whatsoever and I usually wear them nonstop at home, sometimes upwards of 12 hours thanks to transparency mode.

They are way more comfortable than the APP simply because in-ear headphones will eventually cause irritation of the ear canal over prolonged wearing no matter how well they fit.

My ears are fully covered by the headphones as well so fit and isolation are as good as it gets. No clamping pressure either.

On the other hand there are people who can't get their ears fully inside the cups which ruins the noise cancelling. Or they notice strong clamping pressure and weight. So unfortunately I cannot guarantee that they will suit you.

The Airpods Max are in my opinion the best Airpods. However, they still use the older H1 chip. The APP2 have the H2 chip which slightly improves functionality overall leading to better noise cancelling. I don't miss the H2 chip and I believe the Airpods Max are more comfortable and thus superior regardless of the older chip generation.

The in-ear headphones have their advantages on the go, I don't use them at home. And I only use the APM at home as they are just too big and inconvenient on the go. But you can bring them along if you're gonna spend a few hours sitting down somewhere. Different tools/sizes for different uses.

Spatial audio might seem better despite the older chip simply because over-the-ear headphones can create a bigger soundstage than in-ear headphones.

I'd give the APM a try and consider them fantastic headphones. An updated version has been rumored for years and is now supposed to come out this September. But that's what everyone said last year too.

@okkibs; thanks for the info and good detail. I can wait until September to see and, if I buy APMs I can give Sonys, Skullcandys and some no na,e clones to my sistet.

Much appreciated.

Now that I’ve got, for me, the proper eartip pieces, the APP2s don’t fall out except when going to sleep with them. Again, using the, in dialysis at the moment and they completely drown out staff sound. Size wise they are jst smal enough to be attractive to the cats so am looking forward to AP Max2s which the cats would def struggle with and couldn’t swallow.

Wiping them down after use (don’t always remember) cuts down on the attractiveness for the cats.

Having USB-c to power the Airpods will be great; everything in my house seems to be USB-c now.

USB-C would be nice. After two years people said to wait for the Max 2, then after 3 years they said the Max 2 will drop any day (last October/November), this spring they said it would for sure be released any day and now it's summer and nothing. Everyone's convinced this September is the time for them but I really wouldn't count on it. If those rumors were true each time we'd be looking at the release of the Max 5 now.

There is a trick I use for very noise environments, get a pair of very comfortable ear plugs, then put the Airpods Max over my ears with ANC and just turn up the volume a lot more. It's just tricky to get both sides to the same volume, if one ear plug is inserted a bit more then that side will end up quieter. But no outside noise will come through.

I had no problem wearing the AirPod Maxes on my head for hours at a time - the weight was very well distributed. I returned them because I chose to have all mobile devices that use USB-C, but if Apple ever releases a new pair with that connector (hopefully with an improved battery - though it was great as-is - and even better sound) I'd go for it.

Happily wear my APM all day, every day at work. They are noticeably weightier than my Bose 700’s but not uncomfortably so. Biggest issue I have with them is the fabric cushions absorb sweat, so need to clean them every few months to keep them fresh. All worth it for the sound, especially with Atmos music & films, and the seamless switching between devices.

I have the APP2 and the Max and rarely listen to the Max. I find the sound quality to be comparable, but the size and weight of the Max is annoying. I have no comfort issues with the Pro's.

You can soak them in cold-ish to slightly warm water mixed with a small amount of hypoallergenic liquid laundry detergent. Rinse thoroughly and let them dry overnight. After nearly a year that restored mine really well. I got applecare for them because you actually get one free cushion replacement which makes up for the applecare cost entirely. You can request that shortly before the 2 years are up and store them until the originals are worn out.

Should I upgrade to AirPods Max next (who am I kidding, when), I’ll bear this in mind for cushion replacement. 👍

That's a great trick indeed, and it even works with cheap non-ANC headphones if you don't mind annoying people near you.

I used to do that when flying at the back of the plane with bargain-basement ANC headphones. It was quite effective, since you're basically stacking a second layer of sound blocking on top of the first layer (the ear cups) and the ANC.

The major downside is that, unless you buy fancy concert earplugs, they don't block all frequencies evenly, so whatever you're listening to is not going to sound very good, and the high frequencies get really muffled. It can also get loud for someone sitting near you, although if the environment is noisy enough that's probably not an issue.

All that said, the AirPods Max ANC is so good that I don't even bother with that anymore--flying has become an almost disorientingly quiet experience, and I've been genuinely impressed with how much background office noise they block (which is what I bought them for).

In answer to the original question:

I have both APP2 and APM, and use both at the office and when flying.

The noise cancelling is very similar; I sometimes do a little better with APP2 since they're easier to get a good fit on for someone who wears glasses, but once I get the APM on right they block at least as much sound as the APP2. I think on planes with constant, low-pitched, quite loud noise, they're about the same; at the office when it's people talking getting blocked, the APM do an even better job, but not dramatically so.

The audio quality on the APM is noticeably better, but the APP2 are already quite good so I admit I only really notice if I'm listening to music in a quiet environment. Spatial Audio is similar, I'd say a bit better on the APP2 for head tracking, and a bit better on the APM for 3D positioning when you're not moving your head.

The APM are however heavy, and I at least do notice it. If I'm leaning back and not really holding my head up (like on a plane) it's not a big deal, but at my desk I'm certainly increasingly aware I'm wearing them after a few hours, and I avoid putting them on at work when I don't have to. The band is comfortable, but my head is also on the sensitive side and I do start to feel it after a while, but then the APP2 also get uncomfortable after a few hours.

One APP2 note, I bought memory foam tips to replace the silicon ones. I actually think the silicon ones were more comfortable (they feel "lighter" and don't put as much pressure on the ear canal), but the silicon irritated my ears after a relatively short period of time, enough that I actually had skin peel if I wore them too often. The foam does block sound better than the silicon, since it fits tighter and conforms better, which is a bonus.

Depending on the device, you can correct that in:
