Yeesh. That username is a ban magnet

The sound definitely justifies the price. The B&O Beoplay $500 definitely don't sound this good, and they actually sound worse with noise cancelling active.
I actually forgot about how much worse my past ANC headphones sound when that feature is turned on. It has been a while since I've tried ANC headphones though.

I’m returning my AirPods Max. I feel pressure above my ears and can hear my blood pumping harder.

My XM4’s are a much better fit. These are only good for short-term use before it’s painful.

  • They smell weird. Seems like mostly the ear cups, but also the headband? Not enough to smell while wearing, but definite chemical oder when you put your nose up to them. Likely this will dissipate.
haha This is called polyester. Glad someone took the time to sniff them :D

You still stated they weren't designed to be portable. Apple's marketing material with people wearing them outdoors indicates that they were. I was simply not understanding your statement.
I was talking very specifically about the complaint the person I was referring to made, EG, not being able to fold them up and make the more portable in that way.

They are portable in a sense that you can wear them outside, obviously.

Hopefully that clears up your obvious confusion!

I expect to be called a fan boy for not totally roasting Apple over it, but I am typing this while listening to a movie and just blown away by the soundstage, and so just don't care that much about the case. It will protect it enough sitting at home.
You have a right to the way you feel about the headphones case. Your opinion is just as solid as anyone else's. If someone has the fricken audacity to call someone a fanboy for not following the other hater's lead by trashing Apple publicly then those haters have a problem. You don't. If you like something Apple created that nobody else here does you have a right to defend Apple. This place is not called "I hate Apple Dot Com". Some idiots tend to think that's what MR is supposed to be. Sad for them. I upvoted you.

Dude, say what? LOL. Glad to know the ONLY thing that ranks in your books is ANC, but even the MX4 does a reasonable job of that so that listening to music, watching movies, on a plane is better with ANC on than off. Or do you disagree with that? And the ANC with the Max is excellent. I tested that sitting next to a window unit air-conditioner at full blast. Not quite the low frequencies of a plane, but not a bad test. It passed with flying sounds (tried to hit a pun there but failed) So yeah, I am looking forward to the experience while traveling. No clue how you can say accuracy and clarity do not count on a plane. Sounds snobbish. Shrug. And do you even know or have experience with Spatial Audio as Apple implements it? I am guessing not, because you totally missed that point.

But you are right, I AM celebrating how much I enjoy Spatial Audio with ANC on my Max. The purchase was a bit of a gamble because I didnt have all the expert reviews in. But I took it, and am very very pleased/relieved. And I am going to enjoy these over the holidays while people who waited for the reviews wait for another 3 months to get theirs. My guess is Santa is leaving you coal though, so don't expect a miracle.
Don't invest too much time in trying to reason with these trolls coming out of the woodworks. Your experience with the Airpods Max provides useful information for people actually looking to purchase wireless headphones.

I recently purchased the Sony XM4s on sale after doing quite a bit of research online. However, I have the same issues with them as others have previously mentioned: average ear cup size, average call quality, small soundstage, overly warm sound & plasticky build. It's sort of like a jack of all trades and master of none (other than ANC). However, in that price range I'm not going to get much better from similar competitors (ex. Bose 700, QC 35 II or Razer Opus) in reviews I have read online. It looks like the Airpods Max have larger ear cups, bigger soundstage & better build quality. Can you give me your thoughts on the following?

1. Do the Airpods Max get uncomfortable in a shorter period of time then the XM4s? I think the larger ear cups will help but I'm wondering if the big difference in weight negates that advantage.

2. Is the microphone call quality on par or significantly better than the XM4s?

3. How do you plan to pack those headphones when travelling? From the looks of it, I would not feel comfortable just putting them in my backpack like the XM4s.

Thanks again for providing valuable feedback to the community.

I’ll get a nice leather or cloth drawstring pouch to keep the AirPods Max with the smart case whenever I wanna put it in the backback. Apple always give wide range of opportunities to the 3rd party accessories makers to make money. 😅

Again, many people can’t tell the difference between $10 wired earbuds and $500 over the ear cans.

These headphones are made for studio guys and audiophiles...and there are plenty.
There are quite a few people who don't care about the difference between the sound quality of $10 wired earbuds and $500 over the ear cans.

People who can't tell the difference are likely legally deaf.

They go into "standby" when you take them off your head. The case puts them into an "ultra-low-power mode," but that doesn't mean that taking them off doesn't put them in a regular low-power mode.
You're right -- my terminology was wrong. I would like a button to put them in "ultra-low-power mode."

Smart case isn't useless if you live somewhere (Australia comes to mind) where 8 legged things can crawl into the ear pod for a rest just before you pop them on...
Don't be a drongo mate. Next you'll be using a smart purse instead of a stubbie holder.

Ya but those are a different product segment. Wired and often used with an amp and I'm sure sound a lot better. It's a big jump when the best in the wireless noise cancelling segment is around half the price and more comfortable. I'm sure Apple will sell a load of them but wouldn't be surprised from this article if less die hard apple people return them based on comfort and overall value.
"Competitive sound quality"...with headphones half the price.
I own B&O H9 and therefore compare the Max with a $500 Headset. After a few hours and first impression I rate the build quality even, the Max is more comfortable when you wear them for a few hours. I would rate the audio quality even with a little advantage on the Max side - but that requires more time. And last but not least, ANC and Speech quality of the Max is way better!

I’ll stick with the nuraphones: better price point and the ability to tailor the EQ towards your hearing profile

"The AirPods Max probably have a little more detail in the mids and highs but being able to EQ the Sony's means I can get a much more custom sound that suits me." It used to be that speakers and headphones were measured on accuracy, not "more pleasing to me". Anyone can adjust the headphones after the fact, I'll take accuracy any day, that is where Active EQ is awesome
Kinda. But not really.

Studio headphones designed to try and achieve a flat frequency response.

So if a track isn't mixed well, it won't sound good.

Audio pleasure headphones are designed to sound pleasing.

Different genres of music benefit from boosting/cutting specific frequencies.

I asked for a pair of Beats Solo Pros from my family for Christmas and wondered if I should ask for cash towards a pair of Airpod Pros instead.

But I can see myself buying the Airpod Pro V2 and keeping them at home or for flights.

Solo Pros will be much better to chuck in a rucksack.

I looked - some headphones are $1500 going up to $3000. Personally, I do not need that, but apparently there are some that do, or they wouldn't be available

Well, I've never listened to $1500+ headphones so I won't say they aren't worth it. But there are brands that I'd call "status" brands. Why are Leica cameras so wildly expensive? Because of the red dot and the belief that they are somehow worth the money. At one time they were the gold standard for news photographers. Now, they are pretty much just a camera, but they scream, look at me I shoot Leica, bet you can't afford to shoot Leica. Audiophiles spend wild amounts of money on cables, can they hear the difference, or do they just think they do because they spent lots of money on cables and need to validate their purchase.

I've been using my pair for a little while and it's too early to tell. But I find the comment "I'm a little shocked if I'm honest that the Sony's have a much more pleasing sound" rather funny but it just goes to show how personal audio and sound truly is.
So, from a few years ago, I read that in order to listen to the music as intended, you shouldn’t EQ your music. Enhancing the bass, while it sounds better to you, is not the music the producer designed. So, when there is an option (rental cars especially LOL) I always set the EQ flat all the way across. That sounds like it should be right and, of course, everything is subjective, but after reading your post, I wonder what you think?
