Because we have different ears and inner ears. And hearing changes ineluctably. Only a tiny fraction of the population can hear the full range generated by such headphones. My audiogram shows a significant loss around 2kHz and, for any reason, AirPods Max seem to sound better. They are just a good match for my ears.
Paid $429 for mine during the Black Friday period. I love them and use them a lot - just not for travel because they don't fold up nicely and somehow the cups break their seal when I lean back in an airplane seat and ruin the noise canceling effect. Oh, and lightning. I have a set of Sony XM's for when I get on a plane.
In terms of why I love them - sure they are pricey, but they are also excellent. I'm no Audiophile, but the spatial sounds crisp to my ears and the sound is always really well balanced no matter what the music genre. Transparency is the best feature because it literally sounds like no headphones. It's miles ahead of my Sony XM's.
It’s legitimately shocking how drastically over priced AirPods Max are. … If you know anything about the headphone market you know that these are priced easily twice what they should be.
While getting the iPad Pro yesterday at the Apple Store, there was another shopper bought the AirPods Max.I sure hope nobody pays this
I got mine for $350 ... a couple years ago now
I still find Spatial Audio on music tracks to be a gimmick and mostly not enjoyable
…
I don't get it at all

Maybe its just my pair i got used, but the APM felt cheap to me. I feel like they sound better than my bose qc35 and sony xm, and yes the materials are solid but it still felt cheaply built. The ANC button wiggles pretty freely (without pressing it) and the knob has a cheap feeling twist to it IMO. the buttons feel "loose" if that makes sense. Maybe b/c whoever had them before me was hard on them and this is the only pair ive ever had an up close with. Otherwise, I feel like they sound the best of the 3 brands ive mentioned. Not entirely true, unless you consider Sony XM5s and Bose QCs etc to also be drastically overpriced. Those are both great headphones, but you can’t compare their build quality and materials (mostly plastic) to that of the AirPods Max, made of machined aluminium and stainless steel. The difference in construction/materials certainly justifies the extra $150 or so.

I’m continually surprised at how many of these I see at our gym every day.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’m just repeating what I’ve seen previously on MacRumors, or at least what I remember having seen. Why wouldn’t they put the H2 chip and functionality on the next version?

it's legitimately a "we don't want to make these" price.
Yep, the Sonys are the best at noise cancellation tech. By far. I have the WH1000XM4. They're lighter, more comfortable, comparable sound quality with the Airpods Max. They also have audio and USB-C jacks, airplane plug adapter, and they fold flat, and the cups fold up to fit into the included case. Did I forget to mention they're well over $100 cheaper? Only two colors, though. And the app is an Android port.Paid $429 for mine during the Black Friday period.
