AirPods Max - Lighting to 3.5mm Adapter vs. Cable - Sound Quality?

Not only specific to the AirPod Max but has there been any testing done on sound quality differences between using the adapter vs using the cable?

Shortly after trying this, my right side stopped working until I put it back in the bra case.....is there no wire going between the AirPods Max sides? I thought I shorted them out!

I'm guessing it's like the regular AirPods and the left synchs with the right.
