i think people should just get the lightening verison for cheaper. basically no difference in sound from these

Well, miss out on lossless if that’s important to you.
Also, if you finally transitioned completely from lightning to usb-c, it would kinda suck to have to still keep a lightning cable around just for one thing.

Yeah guess depends how many lightening you have in the house. We still have an iPad 10.9 with lightening in our charging corner
AirPods Max USB-C were available for several days last week, at $399 from Best Buy. And you could use the PayPal 20% discount offer as well. My net price was $345, including tax.
Assuming you're in the US and want 'new', there would be no reason to hunt down the Lightning version.
Hopefully this sale price will come back soon.
