Airpods Max Volume change lag

Either via iPhone button, slider or the crown the headphones seem to lag a second or two before changing the volume. Anyone else noticing this?
 
Today I've noticed the volume needs to be turned past the 'half' point to be barely hearable.. usually I can hear the full sounds at around 1/3rd of the bar..

Anyway to fix this?
