AirPods Max with third party Lightning - 3.5mm cable?

I've actually considered upgrading to the USB-C version just to have access to more cables (assuming third party USB-C to headphone cables even work). I'd love to see someone graft the lightning connector (the part with the chip) onto a good solid headphone cable.
