Two headlining features of Apple's new AirPods 2 Pro earbuds won't be available to use on iPad and Mac when they first land in customers' hands on Friday, September 23, the company has revealed.

According to a footnote in Apple's AirPods Pro 2 press release, "Personalized Spatial Audio profiles and Find My will be available with iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura in October."

Support for the new features appears to be included in iOS 16, but with iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura not launching to the public until October, users on iPad and Mac will have to wait until those updates are released for full AirPods Pro support.

With Personalized Spatial Audio, users perceive sound individually, based on the size and shape of their head and ears. And with the TrueDepth camera on iPhone, users will be able to create a personal profile for Spatial Audio that delivers a listening experience precisely tuned just for them.

As for Find My, the new ‌AirPods Pro 2‌ feature an updated charging case with a new speaker for Find My, which allows them to be located with the Find My app.

Update: This article has been updated to indicate that the features should work with iOS 16 on iPhones at launch, but they won't work on iPad or Mac until the new software updates for those platforms launch in October.

Considering I normally wait until like .5 before I update to a new iOS release or unless my organization forces me too, I might as well wait before buying this.

Whomever wrote this article misunderstands. The functionality will be available with iOS 16.0, but there isn’t going to be an iPadOS 16.0. Instead, the first iPadOS 16.x release is going to be 16.1 in October.

Apple did *not* say it won’t be released until iOS 16.1 for iOS

I think that's incorrect, they specifically said iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura because this feature is available on iOS 16 already and has since the first beta, but the profile wont sync to iPadOS and macOS until October.

No problem with hardware in the supply chain but software. Make these dorks come back to the office because clearly it’s not working out.
Ignoring the unnecessary insult there...

There were software issues before WFH became a big thing, it is just a bias some people have against remote work. You can't slack off all day and keep the job.

Correct. iPadOS won’t have a 16.0 release; the first release of iPadOS is 16.1 in October. But this will be available day 1 with iOS 16.0

Of course software issues existed before WFH. But Apple’s issues have notably increased since 2020, neatly coinciding with the shift to WFH. Of course only Apple has actual data on this, but the available evidence points to a marked decrease in software quality the past few years.

Feels like Apple are overhyping spacial audio. Several in earphones have this now. A more competitive price would be the winner
Personally, I don't get the hype. I can't stand spatial audio on my current AirPods Pro and ended up turning it off. A lot of songs sound weird, have odd volume issues with vocals and instrumentation, and overall just doesn't add anything of value.

Slide controls are probably the biggest thing for the AirPods Pro. Finally volume controls without the need for Siri or touching the device.

No USB-C or alternate colours are a let down. Charge cable uniformity across Apple devices still needs a lot of work.

Normally, I’d pick these up in an instant, but knowing USB-C may be coming next year, I dunno….

can you use volume they didn't say that

I'm going to hold off on the AirProds Pro 2 until I can get some some comparisons against the Sony XM4's. I love my Airpods Pro, but the custom EQ's in the XM4's set them apart.

I bought the XM4's but don't fit well in my small ears. Gave them to the wife who loves them.

I would be really excited about more additions to the spacial audio ecosystem if the apple music UI wasn't absolutely awful. For a company heralded for good design I don't know how they continue to screw up Apple Music.

So if the XM4's don't fit you, what are you holding off for?

Basically checking to see if the audio profile changed on the APP 2's. If nothing changed, then might as well ride the AP 1's until they die off or may try the Sennheiser TW3's.

I still get a solid 3 hours on the APP 1's, so not really in a rush.

I know I'm probably in the minority here but I *detest* Spacial Audio. I don't want my headphones changing sound when I move my head. It's absolutely infuriating. When they stealth turned it on the first time and I happened to listen to some tracks with it on while out walking, I thought my headphones were dying. Plus, when watching stuff on my TV at home, one of the main benefits of wearing my headphones is that the audio doesn't get messed up if I'm lying on my side.
