AirPods Pro Never Plays Music on First Attempt

AirPods connect. Tap sensor & I hear the click no music plays. Have to tap again to play.

AirPods connect. Tap play on Apple Watch. Play animation starts but no music & goes back to paused animation. Same situation, have to tap again.

What gives?
