AirPods Turn 10

Apple unveiled the first AirPods on September 7, 2016, meaning the iconic wireless headphones are now 10 years old. However, the AirPods did not launch until December that year.

On the same day, Apple ignited controversy when it introduced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus without a headphone jack. Apple still sells EarPods for customers who want wired headphones, with 3.5mm headphone jack, Lightning, and USB-C versions available for use with a wide variety of devices.

One of the best products they’ve launched recently. True wireless earbuds were barely a thing before Apple introduced them, and now I can barely wear corded earbuds.

And they still fall out of my ears and that includes the current models with silicon tips. I even tried the add on tips that were supposed to make them work for people like me. No joy. 😂

It is a shame that they are completely useless for me. I went to an Apple Store to see if it was the way I was using them and they gave up and agreed that they do not work for me. Refunded the cost immediately. Sigh.

This takes me back to when they were released and I went to  SoHo to test them out. I loved them and told the sales rep who was assisting me "I'm sold, I'll take 'em". He laughed with glee and said — "They are sold out everywhere, get on the list." 😀

Only ten years? Feels like another lifetime ago when my Apple Watch Series 0 was under warranty and I got AirPods to use with it at the gym. Both were finicky, but I was a pioneer, haha.

And oh yeah, they never stayed in my ears until I got some third party covers for them which were fussy to put on and had to be removed to put them in the charging case. Good times.

For me - my work - my routine - my lifestyle...AirPods have been amazing. I used to wear Bose noise canceling earbuds (with the big cord and battery pack) everywhere. I just adapted because it's what I wanted: great audio, noise cancellation for great audio and great phone calls.

AirPods Pro has changed that and it's a "must have" for me. Love them. The latest version is the best fitting and best version (to me) yet!

I remember for the first year or so there being tons of jokes about how they were too expensive, easy to lose, ugly because "they look like they just cut the wires off the EarPods", until everyone and their parents suddenly decided they were actually good and bought a pair for themselves. 😛

I still don't own any because I don't like the music app on the iPhone. 🫠

They're no longer the disposable product they were in the beginning. I think I barely got two years of life out of my first couple of pairs, great as they were at the time. My AirPods Pro 2s are still going strong after 4 years, I use them daily. My 3's feel like they will last a very long time.

What's awful is when the wrong device connects to the AirPods and the call is important and yeah, that's why I have a pair of EarPods on my desk.

Just pointing out the irony of some of Apple's decisions.

Don't you worry little buddy, I think you misunderstood by thinking I have a problem with landfills filling. I have all those things iPhones, iPads, Mac mini's, Apple TV's, Home Pod's, Home Pod Mini's, chargers, cords, and so on.

What's awful is when the wrong device connects to the AirPods and the call is important and yeah, that's why I have a pair of EarPods on my desk.

And the sound quality when they do connect on phone calls is pretty horrendous in my experience (which is multiple complaints from friends and family over the years when I've used them during calls).

IMO the last truly successful product launches. It’s crazy it’s been a decade and we’ve gotten nothing but service fees and the Vision Pro.
