There’s quite a bit of play as a result. This might be a dealbreaker for those who use it as a fidget device. :D
 
As a 1st gen user I can say that the hinge is the weak part of the case and has a lot of play so anything different is probably an improvement.

So this is plastic, made to look like the original metal?

I think it’s metal and misleadingly plastic feeling due to its matte finish and tiny surface area making it harder to discern. I think it is aluminum. It’s colder to the touch than the white plastic case itself. The 1st gen AirPods hinge was polished stainless steel.

Edit: Also, mine has almost no play like my AirPods 1st gen Case.

I think its metal, which is why it won't work on some wireless chargers (like mine) unless I put something between case and charger, then works fine.
