I have a pair of 1st gen Meta Ray-Ban glasses. I use them mainly for music, taking photos/videos, and asking general questions (football, tech industry, etc.) I never use them to take photos of items and ask what they are or what they can do. I don’t look at an item and say, “Oooh! What is this?! I’ve gotta take a picture and ask AI!”

Which is why I believe hardly anyone will buy the camera AirPods. Maybe just those non-tech savvy people who believe that just buying the most expensive version of a product will make the best experience.

And then there’s the video of saving an object for later using those AirPods. I could just lift up my wrist and ask Siri to make a note about a particular item. What’s more convenient than that?

The bigger problem is that Visual Intelligence will be all that the cameras can do. They won’t take photos because the Meta glasses already have a tiny camera that is not phenomenal quality, so it will be even worse with the limited space inside an AirPod. It could be the 1080p webcam from the MacBook Neo since it is tiny, and feels a bit lackluster for 1080p. I don’t ever see people in the wild using Visual Intelligence, so this is an even more niche use case.

However, I digress, as I see Apple replacing the current AirPods Pro 3 with the camera model. Because AirPods Pro buyers would have no choice but to buy the camera model, that’s what’s going to get these in people’s ears. They will probably just give it the name below:

AirPods Pro
with Visual Intelligence

The fancy new name and AI feature buzz will make people feel like a price hike is justified. Again, there are people who don’t know a lot about tech and will believe they’ll get a significantly better product just because of the hype around it and the higher price.

Maybe I need to stop being a keyboard warrior on this post and look forward to the new technology.

I hope they do flop.
We don't need any more cameras, of any kind, being normalized "everywhere" on "everything".

I sure wish tech companies had some new ideas that weren't all about surveillance, control and monetization of your data and attention.
They're losing the war with doomscrolling and endless screen time due to new laws and regulations popping up, so they have to keep you "engaged" in new ways. Having cameras everywhere will make the US the best TV show in history.

Though I agree with you in the general sense, there are use cases for these things.

My blind mom uses them for "What color is this <piece of clothing>?" so she matches when getting dressed. And "Do you see the butter on the counter?" when she puts it out of reach by accident. And other similar accessibility situations.

Very good use case
