I use an iPod Touch 2nd generation when I skateboard because I don't mind falling on it and breaking it (already cracked the screen). I've been using Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 with it the last couple years, and it's worked well. There's been occasional audio dropouts, but not much.

I started using my AirPods with it last week, and have been getting much more frequent dropouts. I prefer the AirPods since there's no wire to get stuck on my neck when turning my head, and I can still hear noise around me to hear if someone is nearby. I wasn't expecting them to work as well as they do with my iPhone, the iPod has a much older Bluetooth version. But I at least expected it to work better than the Plantronics do. I've tried forgetting and repairing, and rebooting the iPod. They just don't maintain as stable a connection as the Plantronics.

They do if you want the easy-pairing magic. I had to pair them like you would a non-iOS device. And when I connect them I have to go to the Bluetooth settings to do it.
