AirPods with latest iOS 11 beta. Skipping songs?

How are the AirPods working with the latest iOS 11 beta. Is skipping songs by tapping on the AirPods smooth or you have to tap really hard?

The tapping is the same as before, genuinely not being snarky but why would it be any different ?

I still use them the default way after dabbling a bit with changed settings.

I like that I can skip a song. You can set it for either right or left and sometimes I forget that is skips a song when I really wanted to pause it. Great enhancement in my opinion.

in iOS 11 you got complete new (tap) gestures, like skipping songs. This is not possible in iOS 10

Yeah I know. Been running the beta since beta 2. What I meant was, the physical act of tapping twice is exactly the same as before, as per your original question re: how hard you have to tap it.


I used the new gestures for a little while, but went back to default for various reasons.

I meant how well the song skipping was working.

The AirPods get silent firmware updates all the time. It is quite reasonable to suppose that a new iOS version would bring with it new AirPod firmware.

Sure, but given how basic the gesture function is - probably an accelerometer that registers a movement - I don’t think firmware could make any difference to the “feel” and pressure needed when double tapping with the same hardware.

I love the AirPods, but the double tap gesture has always struck me as very basic and unimpressive relative to the otherwise stellar technology found in them.

Why did you go back to default?

95% of my AirPods usage is for podcasts, I only really listen to music at the gym with different headphones. The skip can be used to go back/forward x seconds in Overcast, quite handy for skipping adverts, but I use my Apple Watch to do that. I often use a single AirPod at a time, varying left and right, so having separate functions for each didn't really work out.

Works really well. I just forget which side is forward a track and which is back.
