Airport auto scanning on imac

Picked up a 2.8 Imac a couple days ago and for some reason when Im online it keeps auto scanning for a signal when its already connected to my wireless signal. The internet doesnt work when it does this but if I click on the spot that says auto scanning it switches to on and the internet starts working. :(

normally if you hover over the Airport icon in the menubar, it will say: Airport: Scanning (to find any additional networks), and then will go to Airport: on (in 2-3 secs). this is normal.
