What I hope it would be

It would be great if Apple could make it the same case as ITV put in AirTunes and a expansion card slot for new standards and keep the USB. Would also be nice if Apple could make updated wireless cards for users with airport and airport extreme cards. I have both Airport Extreme and Multiple Airport Express units. Extreme in service now three years, Express' about two and a half. The Express shoud be updated as well. One of its bigest problems is using the reset button. If you have to factory reset it it can be a nightmare. I now have found using Airport Admin Utility to reset Express is the only way to go. But other than that it has been great. Airtunes works very well. I use two different printers. The all in ones do work fine for printing only. You just need to load print only drivers. Many of the companies did not have these drivers when I first got mine. Price wise it should hit $129.00 for Extreme and $89.00 for Express.

with xserves comming october launch and dotmac's switch to intel, will we see new airport station before 802.11n? or will we see that, at, or after santarosa? itv? new express would be cool. along with the new apple isound. a small wireless speaker set that uses a reciver attatchment to ipod so you can listen and move without wires anywhere. this before ipod with iconrtol interface.ahem.. itv remote ahemm.. the TelePod is comming!

Is there any reason that this wont be the new iTV? I mean, all the components seem very similar, I can imagine this tking over as the Airport extreeme and express.

this may become new express but there will be a professional wireless solution too.

How old are yours?

If you check Apple's support forums you will find that no one has one that lasts more than 1.5 years. I'd pick up a couple to make a music streaming thingy but the premature failures really put me off...

... unless you considering paying $99 for a piece of consumer electronics every year to be "acceptable", in contrast I have a Linksys router doing all sorts of fancy stuff with third party firmwares and it is still going strong after 3 years.

Oh, and it costs less than 1/2 of what the APX went for 3 years ago!

I just checked and noticed I purchased my Airport Express exactly two years ago and it's still going strong. And given it's only been out for 2.5 years, I'd say it would be hard to find one that has been around longer.

The linksys that it replaced didn't stream audio, didn't have a printer port, didn't support wpa encryption, power adapter had to be replaced, and wasn't very portable. In fact, I remember at the time I couldn't find any product that had wireless printing for less than the Airport Express.

anybody get a new airport base station lately?

I noticed that the online Apple store is now shipping the new airport base stations. Has anybody gotten one and tried to determine if they are any different than previous versions?

I am on the look out for a new router but I don't want to buy at the same expensive rate ($179) academic pricing for the airport base station of the same without it possibly having the pre-n specifications.

I suspect that these will have the same card as the latest Macs, allowing Apple to firmware upgrade them next yeat to 802.11N whilst still allowing them to sell current stock at full price until then.

yeah a new base station is in great need. i hope it's shuffle sized, and there are several of them for making a wide area network.

I do think Apple would be wise to extend their range. Airport Express and Airport AV for one segment, (AV being the new name for iTV, though unlikely), then have an Airport Extreme as now but with Draft-N along with Airport Office that replaces built-in modem and possibly usb printing with another three Ethernet ports.

All having PC and Mac compatibility would then make it the perfect solution for those looking for a quality, easy to set-up Wi-Fi router.
