    is there a way to check the signal strength of the device ?

    If you use the Airport Utility program on your Mac to connect to the Express, if you do a Manual Setup, the first screen should show you the connected clients. If you click on that, it should show the signal strength for each client connected to it.

    if you want to Check at ...

    the computer end check out istumbler

    the express end, in airport utility, go to advanced, then click "logs and statistics" then "wireless clients"

    Click on the item in airport utility
    Click Manual setup
    Click Wireless Tab
    Select Wireless Options
    ummmm

    I think from memory it's the logging / snmp tab (sorry not at computer)

    gives signal strength, interference etc.....
    3rd row it the speed items are connected at.

    that is....
