I just bought the new AEBS Gigabit version at Best Buy about two weeks ago. In the past three days it has completely frozen up three times. When it freezes up the light is still green but the wireless network disappears, my G5 connected via ethernet loses internet and can't connect to the base station and my wireless G router that is connected to it loses internet too. So basically it appears like the AEBS simply stops doing everything. Is anyone else having a problem like this? Best Buy doesn't have another one in stock otherwise I would just exchange it for a new one.

Ok, make that 4 times now in three days. This is the biggest piece of crap I've ever spent my money on. Apple is seriously losing their touch lately because 75% of the things I bought from them in the past year haven't worked right almost right away. Looks like I'm just returning it since I can't exchange it.

*sigh* i was going to top by bestbuy on the way home from work today and pick one of the gigabit ones up. if it can't work like it should, then what's the point? too bad there are only 2 other companies with .11n and usb port-based wireless routers. what has happened to apple's quality in their accessories/periphrials? it seems like, as you said, they have lost their touch.. $200 bones after tax is a pretty big investment for a home/consumer level product like that. please post back if you are able to exchange it for another one and let us know if the issue keeps happening. i may go ahead and purchase one and try it out too. i'll make sure they have extras in stock so i can return or exchange it next day if a problem does arise.

I'm having a very similar problem with my airport express. Just stops working. Green light is on, but my iMac and iPhone don't "see it". I have to unplug it, wait a few seconds, and start over like a new install.

Freezing during file txfr to USB drive

I discovered my airport extreme would freeze during file transfers between a Windows machine on the network and the USB drive attached to the airport extreme. Power cycling the airport gets it back up. I will test it with a file transfer to the drive from my MBP...

... large batch file transfer from the MBP seemed to go fine. It figures the problem would be with the Windows box.

You're not the only one... I have the same problem and can repeate it with 100% success (or failure) rate. I have one file on the disk, when I read it, the AEBS freezes. It happens if I access it through XP, Vista or Kubuntu.

The funny thing is that I can access it through my XBox Media Center and LAN...

Writing files to the disk is out of the question... Might freeze the AEBS as well

Let me put it like this. I am rather fed up with this.

I just noticed this today after brining my work laptop home (Vista) and trying to connect.

I wasn't even trying to access the external drive attached to the AEBS, but 3 times now once I've gotten a connection to the base station it has locked up less than 60 seconds later.

Has anyone at least found a work around for it?

I've been having problems too, it happens the most when we have our express plugged in too for airtunes. It doesn't quit while using airtunes, but sometimes when we are just accessing our music off our HDs attached to the AEBS it will lock up, and we will have to power cycle the AEBS. quite annoying.

I'm having the same problem. My situation is a tad different, rather than a Hard Drive attached to the USB port, I have a printer (not used very often.) I have a NAS device connected to one of the gigabit ports that I store all of my media on. I also have an Apple TV that I stream music from my itunes. Sometimes after a bit of music listening (through the apple tv), the base station locks up completely. I have to remove power and give it back. I've tried straight 801.11n (both 2.4 and 5ghz), 802.11n & g mode, and have had no luck. I'm connected to it mainly with an Imac.

This is driving me nuts! Nothing worse than when listening to music and it just stops because it loses connection with itunes. The linksys I was using (wrt54g) worked flawlessly albiet slow when transferring data to my NAS device wirelessley.

UGH!

I got my first mac ever on October the 9th. Together with it I bought an Airport Extreme. Since I bought a BTO (wireless mouse, keyboard and a 750Gb HDD) it was kinda expensive. And I haven't had anything but troubles since I start using this. I'm starting to think that Mac isn't that good as it seems to be. My system has crashed 4 times when importing pictures with Aperture from my XP Box for example.

But we were talking about the AEBS. Yesterday I had 2-3 hangups, and today I've had as many. I've been using routers for $70 that's more stable than this crap. Only things I have connected is my ****ing kick ass iMac (at least if you look at the specs) via WLAN, my PC media center through WLAN as well and then I have my ordinary PC hooked up through Ethernet.

A router for $250 and it can't even copy files over the network? If I can't find any solution for this, I'm gonna get my money back and buy a D-Link DKT-401 router package instead. I installed that at my ex girlfriends house with two wireless computers and one through ethernet. It's been running 24/7 without any problems at all for weeks. This **** hasn't even been running alright for 96 hours.

How about firmware updates? Are they usual?

Glad to see i'm not alone! $200 for a router that crashes is useless.. My 802.11g linksys was stable!

May as well add myself to this.

I have an extreme simple configuration with a usb HDD connected to it (HFS)
My extreme is guaranteed to lock up every time if all i do is try to perform a backup of my iphoto/itunes collection which total about 70gb. I would guess it gets about 15gb into the backup then the extreme just dissapears and i have to reboot to bring back all connectivity including internet.

Looks like this is a very common fault/bug a little concerned as to how apple will find out about this???

I have a mac mini which is on 24/7 for my video security so i will just share the network drive from that instead. I guess all the extreme is good for is hanging off usb printers off it! LOL at the claim of putting a usb hub on the back with multiple items, now I think that would just give it a headache!

I like Macs , but Apples ability to build reliable and compatable WiFi solution is horible. I have linksys router and the iPhone can conect , but not get data from threw it , but all the Macs and PC have no issue. The iPhone is also not workign with ~40% of the WiFi offerings in coffee stores in my erea ( my laptop has no issue with any of them )

Now the previase airport extrem base station would just reboot every time I conected any of my 2 vista laptops to it. I called tech support , and they transfered me to their specialist and 5 days late he called me back and said Vista is not supported, sorry. Now the current Airport extreem basestation , also did that, but after I updated to 7.2.1 instead of rebooting it hangs. ( it does this about 2-3 minutes into conecting, every time )

I am waiting for the tech people to get back to me on this issue. This time it lists vista as supported on the box , so lets see what excuse they have now , or if they will fix it.

Bought my AEBS gigabit at Best Buy about two weeks ago.....Has hung up twice and ive lost wireless but not wired connectivity....a simple unplug and reboot has brought everything back up. I also have a mybook 500 gig attached via USB and have no problem transferring using afp in os x and a mapped network drive in xp. I have an imac, a dell laptop, and an iphone connected wirelessly, and an hp box hooked up via ethernet. :D Are you running the lastest firmware??? 7.2.1 I believe.

Count one more. Internet is flawless, but accessing the external hard drive with windows crashes 100% of the times. Also, trying to access the external drive with large file no matter the OS causes the same effect (although large folders composed o small files seem to work all right)

I've had the AEBS lock-up problem for a couple months now, and took a stab in the dark after I noticed a pop-up about using an IP address that was already in use. This reminded me of the corrupted LAN cache problems, for which the solution was to shut down every Apple device at the same time. We did that and the AirPort Express Base Station has been fine for over forty hours (when it had been locking up at least once a day, sometimes thrice).

Tentative conclusion: Something in the shared cache gets corrupted and as long as any device still has it, it will continue to propagate to any (Apple) machine that joins the network. Sometimes this corrupted data causes previously recognized machines to be forced to use new names like "MyMac (2)", and sometimes the router keeps its light on but actually goes away to contemplate its navel.

Short answer: Shutdown (not sleep!) all entities at once, then turn them on again.

You realize you replied to an 8 year old thread and AirPort Extreme Base Stations have gone through two revisions since the original post right? Your issue has nothing to do with the original post...however, since you did find a solution to your problem you probably should have created a new thread for it.
