I am looking to get a AirPort Extreme base station and use the dual radio modes. However, there are some peripherals like printers and game consoles that will not run on the 5 GHz band. Could anybody please tell me if the router allows sharing between both bands or just in each individual band?

It allows sharing. The network is one big network. The 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz networks can be a different names or the same.

Yup it's all one big network, with different names if you want for the different bands.

For example, my network has a 5 on the end of it for the 5GHz band and nothing for the normal 2.4Ghz band, so my iPhone connects to that while all the Macs in the house and my Apple TV connect to the 5Ghz network. My iPhone can still connect to my Apple TV to control it even though they are on different bands.
