Here is the relevant portion of the floor plan of my home.

The red is the first floor great room with 19' ceiling.
The blue is the second floor loft. It is open to the great room and they share a common ceiling.
The gray is a patio.
The green square is my AirPort Extreme.
It currently only ranges about 1/2 way onto the patio.

So, here a my questions:

1. Would an AirPort Express placed at the yellow square extend the range across the entire patio?
2. Would doing so effect the speed?

That looks like a good spot for an extender. If you're extending wirelessly rather than running Ethernet from the Extreme to the Express, it'll reduce your local network speed significantly (eg speed of a NAS or other local traffic), but it won't much affect Internet speed.

For the record, the express is working great.
It gave cover much further than I had thought.
