AirPort Extreme help please

My Airport Extreme is connected to a wireless router (wireless has been disabled. it is acting like a modem right now).

I am wondering if I could just use the AirPort Extreme on its own, instead of using the router I am using too. Maybe if I can just connect the AirPort to my iMac?
