Lacie HD not supported - according to Apple

I just got off the phone with Apple tech support They informed me that the Lacie Hard drive (two big Esata/USB 1TB) is not supported because it has multiple disks and a RAID controller. To be supported there can be only one partition with 512 block sizes.

I'm not holding my breath, but I think enough people would want to run with this kind of configuration that it would make sense for them to support it.

This stuff about the partitions is bollox. I have exactly the same issues with one, three and five. Each configuration works briefly, then falls over just the same.

Same Problem

I am having the exact same problem as the original poster. The only difference is that I dont have LaCie drives. I have one Seagate 200gig drive and a 140gig drive from an old mac in an adaptec enclosure.

I can bring them back up if I launch the Airport Utility and reset the unit by paging through all the screens by hitting the continue button... I don't have to change any settings mind you, I just get to the end and it resets the AirPort and then they will both mount.

I hope a solution is found... I love the device otherwise.

I tried using Airport Extreme with a LaCie HD and a My Book. I experienced intermittent problems accessing both. It was so frustrating.... I eventually gave up on using AE with a HD.

Hi,

I had a problem where my LaCie Disk worked great with AirDisk for a few hours, then hung my mac mini which forced a hard reset and then failed to mount from that point onwards. I tried everything I could think of for a good few hours and checked all over the internet but no joy. Everytime I tried to mount he disk it came back with a mount error and moaned about incorrect password. I resorted to connection the disk locally by USB which worked fine.

Anyway, I happened to be using Terminal and ls'ed the /Volumes directory. Even though I only had one LaCie Disk connected via USB there were multiple directories under /Volumes that referred to the LaCie Disk using numerous variations (e.g. 'LaCie Disk-1', 'LaCie Disk-2', LaCie Disk 1', etc), these did not show up when using the 'mount' command. I figured these were left behind by unsuccessful mounts or something. I unmounted my working USB disk so as to not cause any confusion and then deleted (rm -r) the directories that had anything to do with LaCie Disk so I was left with just my 'Macintosh HD' direcotory. I then plugged the disk back in using USB and it auto mounted fine under 'LaCie Disk' (i hadn't broken anything). I then unmounted the USB disk and plugged it into the Airport Extreme. I then tried to mount the disk via AirDisk and this time it worked. Yay!!)

So it seems that there was some sort of conflict created between some left over directories in /Volumes and the mounting of the AirDisk under the same name.

Hope this helps anyone who has a similar problem.

Seems to me that its the AE thats gimping up.

It shows as a shared folder on my finder that I can access, but can't hook the time machine to it.

Yet if I hook it directly to my MB it shows as a disk and TM works with it.

A few weeks ago in a different location it was working fine.

This time my AE plugged into a wireless router as a second wireless........this maybe the problem with mine yet my printer is working fine.

wait....are you guys saying you can plug in an external HD to your Airport Extreme, and access the HD wirelessely?

wow!
so then there is no need for me to buy Time Capsule, since I have AEBS:n and a Western Digital 500GB mybook HD!
Am I right??????????????????????

As of now, you can mount a drive that the AEBS is sharing and copy files over to it (using Finder, etc), but the Time Machine feature doesn't work with an AEBS + external drive without some hacking.

Hopefully that'll change.

For weeks I was using my lacie plugged in by USB to my airport extreme and used time machine to do back ups every hour of my entire macbook pro.

I had to download some thing called the 'flux capacitor' to get it working, but man it sure was sweet for the few weeks it worked for.

Ever since I hooked up at my new location though my lacie only shows as a sharded folder and isnt recognized as a disk by time machine.

I now have my lacie hooked by USB to straight to my mac and the back ups are goin great once again, but other users cant use it.

At the old location I partitioned the lacie into 3 equal parts for three other users with time machine.

AEBS + Tiger + LaCie 50 + LaCie 500

I am running Tiger. When I connect my two LaCie HD 50 and 500 directly on my computer they work like a charm. Connected to the AEBS, they don't even get recognized at all, not happened once. It's like they would not exist.

If someone has similar problems and solved them (partialy), then please explain.

AEBS and any USB drive

I have had a Cavalry USB (500GB) HD connected to an AEBS for a couple of months now. Am beginning to think the BS in AEBS stands for something other than Base Station. I don't believe the AEBS is good for ANY hard drive sharing! Have had nothing but problems. I had wanted to use the drive as a network drive for backups etc., but never had any success with backup software in this config. (Had to use a different HD connected direct to iMac for sched. backups). Anyway, after copying LOTS of data to the network drive (figuring this would at least give me some data protection) I have discovered all my data on that drive has been corrupted. When I moved the drive to a direct connection on a laptop, the laptop couldn't recognize it -- would not mount. I had to wipe the drive and start over. Apple owes its customers a refund or a fix. This is not acceptable. I wasn't asking the AE to do anything radical, just normal read/write activity with no other users in play to cause interference. So why was my data corrupted? This is one frustrated customer speaking. I have NO faith that Time Capsule will be any better.

As I reported earlier, non of my HDs connected to AEBS were working (running Tiger). I contacted Apple support and voila, it works like a charm. They suggested to go back to an earlier firmware since the last one got optimized for Leopard.

You open AirPort Utility
Go on "check for updates" and hold the "option key" down while selecting it. This gives you a selection of past firmwares to download. I chose the last one of the current one (I think that's version 7.1.1). After that I have no problems of using the HDs for Airdisk.

AEBS & USB Hard Drives

First... thanks to letsdiscussit for the firmware tip.
At least there's a chance this will prevent a recurrence of my most recent problem. But is strikes me as rather peculiar that Apple would auto-download an update for Leopard to Tiger users when such conflicts are likely. Don't they have a filter to prevent these clashes?

On another subject: Someone posted a remark that Apple "never promised" to support AEBS/ext. USB HD backup capabilities. That may be technically true in the strictest legal sense; however the following link suggests a strong case can be made that Apple led everyone to expect network backups using the AEBS/USB HD configuration:

Try turning on journaling.

I have three discs shared on the Airport Extreme Gigabit. One is a Lacie 500Gb. Most of the time all is well. Backups and general file sharing works fine on a five Mac network.

However, the power blips, or the cable modem forces a reboot of the AE, the Lacie drive didn't usually want to show back up. The utility showed all of the drives, but only the Lacie wouldn't re-mount. Doing various amounts of reboot, powering down/up or connecting via USB for Disk Utility would always get it back.

This last time (power blip) nothing was working. After reading a bunch of threads along with this one, I thought I would evaluate all of the settings on each of the drives to compare. The Lacie was the only non-journaled volume (they are all Mac OS Extended format). So, I clicked the "Enable Journaling" button on the Lacie. Then they all were plugged back into the AE, and poof. All was well again.

The other two drives are generic cases and drives.
