two questions...

how did u get two separate ip for imac and airport??

I went to the network prefPane and added it as a manual TCP/IP entry. It was initially on DHCP but I wanted a static address.

...Surely each wireless card must have its own IP alongside the MAC address?

is internet working on any of the two machines?
you have just two machines, right?

There are 5 machines here but I'm only interested in linking these 2 at the moment. None of the other machine have a wireless card yet. This is more an experiment to see how well it will work.

The internet works fine on both machines. They both have there own dialup modem to make a link if necessary. Internet will not shared between machines until ADSL hopefully becomes available in the town I live.

I'm not concerned with the internet, I just wan't to be able to share the music library and throw files back and forth. The DWL-900AP+ will eventually be used to link up over about 14.5 Miles (9 Km) with an Antenna I have already built.

Do I need to buy a WiFi card for the PC and then link that and the AirPort Card to the DWL-900AP+ Base Station? hmmm probably not.

This is a bit new to me at the moment and certainly wasn't as easy as linking up 4 BlueTooth devices :)

I don't know what I did but now when I goto network I can see the shared drives. I must have done something right by following the advice here so thanks guys.

Ok me, looks you are the only one helping me this time :)

(Takes a visit into the back region of my mind for a deep and meaningful brainstorming session)

Analysis:
hmmm I think my problem is that I am trying to use my Access Point (BaseStation) as a Client also which simply cannot be done.

Conclusion:
Me thinks me should buy a PCI Wireless Card to slot into the PC and try that. They aint that expensive so even if the theory doesn't work...

Well done Son you will get much better at this real soon :p

well..there is nothing wrong in what you were doing..all the machines connected to the hardware access point..should see each other and be able to connect, through the network..In my apartment, two of my roommates' desktops, windows, are connected to a router through ethernet, and my ibook, my roommate's xp laptop are connectd through wireless to the router..
so..can you check if you have the firewall turned on , on the xp?
second, connect through your airport..so that u have the .49 ip..then open terminal and write, 'findsmb'...see if it comes up with the xp machine...if it does, you can connect thru smb...
hope it helps

ok just another quick question. I figured out that it was a firewall that was keeping me from getting the computers to see each other.

Is there anyway to keep the firewall open and still have the computers see each other. (Do I even really need a software firewall with an airport extreme base station)

Thanks

if you are using a router, it has its own firewall. so you dont really need to put on the firewall on the windows machine.
and for mac, firewall is easy to configure.you can keep windows sharing on.
cheers
