dont get a router.
Get a wireless access point - You'll only be able to use 1 device at a time on the wifi but it'll be better than nothing and whatever device you use will still get a IP from the DHCP servers in your school.

If you use a router then you'll have to setup things like gatways and DNS servers and yout school's IT tech dept will know you have done this.

It makes sense. You are sure that they will be able to track if I had attached a router?

If I were you I would call them and tell them you're setting up a wireless router in your room and if they have a problem with that then they can get you WiFi access on your floor right away.

You're paying for your education and to live there... you bought a laptop to have mobile ability and I'm assuming you were given the assumption that "blanketed WiFi" would cover your floor.

I graduated a few years ago and it really ticked me off when my school pulled crap like this. (And yes, not having WiFi on higher floors AND not allowing you to set up your own wireless network IS crap)

Make sure they remember that you are their customer and that their first and most important responsibility is to you.

It is pretty annoying. I'm going to try and argue my way to one of the two solutions. I don't even mind setting up my own, just want to be able to have wifi.

Final report

So I called IT and got a nice guy. I explained what the situation was, and he was really cool and understanding. He said that if they offered wifi where I live, then they would have a problem with setting up my own, but since not, they would most likely ignore it, and at the very most, ask me to shut it down.

A friend of mine had already set up an airport I just found out, and he gave me all the settings I would need. Thank you for all your help guys. The stars all aligned and it seems to have worked out. :D

Haha... nice. You lucked out. My friend in college got business class cable and had it paid for by selling his, lol. I thought it was genius on a bunch of levels... one because my college had issues with EVERYTHING and because a lot of the kids in my school were the rich pompous type who had mommy and daddy to resolve everything for them... really mean-spirited of me to admit this, but it was awesome to see them get taken advantage of for once instead of the other way around.
