Airport Extreme Setting

When you go to the desktop airport drop menu. What does the option "Use Interference Robustness" mean? and is there any way to see signal strenghth of networks with out trial and error?

Interference Robustness cancels out all other wireless devices that could damage your wireless signal (wireless phones, microwaves) the downside is that it runs down battery and sometimes internet is slower.

I do not know of any ways to check other networks in range without ckicking on them though.
