Hello everyone. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I have an AirPort Extreme creating a wireless network. When I connect my 2019 base MacBook Pro to it, the max Tx rate I get is 300mbps. However when I connect a 2012 Mac mini to it I get 450mbps.

My MacBook Pro is about 7ft away from the router with no obstructions.

Steps I have tried:

  • Tried another AirPort Extreme router - same issue as above
  • Created a separate 5ghz network - still caped at 300mbps
  • Connected Mac mini to both extreme units - max tx rate 450mbps

Any suggestions on what the issue could be?

I started investigating as the speed was an issue (file transfer and upgraded broadband to over 300mbps). Not to expensive in the end to replace the router.

No need to replace if the performance satisfies you. 300 mbps of good signal is fine for a vast majority of applications and use cases.

Good.

Depending of your house's configuration, you might be better with a mesh network. See Ubiquiti Amplifi https://amplifi.com.

I really like Ubiquiti's products.

See also Unifi Dream Machine if you are a bit more techy.

Thanks

I just got a ubiquity access point as a stop gap. Due to the house structure its a bit more complicated, so will look at sorting it out properly (including dream machine) later this year.
