I've been using a 2008-2009 Airport Extreme base station and last year extended my network with an Express station. My internet has been wonky as of late so not knowing where the problem was I purchased the latest Extreme station today and upgraded my modem to the latest and greatest that offers the ac spectrum.

I use the Airport Extremes out of habit because as memory serves the Xfinity modems didn't offer router functionality back in 2008 and it was that or link sys.

Here's my question. What is the advantage of an Airport Extreme instead of the router from Xfinity?

don't know much about xfinity. went from ancient mac mini-like airport extreme to the standing rectangular extreme 5-6yrs ago. new house is larger with weak spots at the ends so started wireless router shopping recently. with apple giving up, was about to get a netgear nighthawk or asus router with 3-4 antennas when i learned about the latest tech hitting home wifi: mesh networks

eero, luma, ambifi, google wifi, etc including netgear's orbi. ordered an orbi. being new, all pricey 2-3x cost of conventional routers. but with conventional routers, extenders may extend wifi but speed drops off. so these mesh seem like the future and way to go. looking forward to property-wide close to 100% of the speed i pay the cable company. will see

Then get the Netgear Orbi!
