54Mbit/s or 54Mbps, if you mean that with 54M (M stands for "Mega" only), is the theoretical throughput of 802.11g capable devices. 802.11n capable devices, like the AirPort cars in Macs or the AirPort Express or the AirPort Extreme Base Station have a theoretical throughput of 270 to 300 Mbit/s, though in reality that varies from 7MB/s to 20MB/s, more than enough for todays internet speeds, but a bit slow for large data transfers (10GB +) on a daily or even faster basis.

Ahh, now have seen that "linksys n" comment. What exact Mac do you have and do you know, if it is 802.11n capable? You can check via System Profiler. Btw, how did you determine the "54M", via Option/Alt clicking the AirPort icon in the Menu Bar? Maybe you have to set the router to 802.11n, which is using the 5GHz band and not the 2.4GHz band.
