I have one new iMac connected from router to ethernet port, and an older iMac just using wifi along with my two iPads. I have Mountain Lion on both iMacs. My question is what is "Airport" for and should I be using it or it's not necessary?
I don't have any problems using both iMacs, but where would "Airport" enter the picture? I don't understand why I would need or not need to be using it. Please enlighten me. I've gotten along very well without it all these years.
    Thanks for a reply

AirPort Utility (as your thread title suggests, and if it has something to do with what you call "Airport" in your post) is a utility to manage Apple's network devices, namely the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme Base Station and AirPort Time Capsule.
There is no other need for that, thus if you do not have any of those devices, you can leave AirPort Utility alone.
