I'm trying out Airprint in 4.2, and I'm confused.
1) I can only see the 'Print' option in Photos, Mail and Safari, so how do we print files in iDisk, Dropbox, Docs2Go, etc.?
2) when I try to print to a printer connected to my PC, it is seen OK, but when I select it, I get a prompt that says 'Password required for Epson.... @ Iain-PC'! Evey username and password combo I know just fails. I have no idea about passwords on printers.
Any ideas?

Your username should be the name of the administrator on your user accounts on windows and the password is the one you use to log on to your computer if you are using windows.

Thanks but that is wrong information. If you read the rest of the thread you'll see that it is necessary to have Guest Account set on.
I don't have a password on my account, and I am the administrator.
But thanks anyway.

After numerous attempts on how to locate the printer using the iPad, these were the steps I took in order to make it work: (using windows vista)

- disable password protection from print sharing.
- rebooted the system.
- afterwards, iPad was able to see Epsom nx1100
- using AirPrint, it asks username and password ( I don't think there's any way getting around it )
- the username I used is the name of the "administrator" on the user accounts ( put it as the way you see the name)
- password is what you use to log on the PC when you turn on the machine.

Hope it works!

OK, apologies to f.mos.
I have discovered various things now.
1) you don't need iTunes to be running as if you look in Task Manager/Services you will see Airprint service running without iTunes being loaded.
2) you don't need to have Guest Account on at all. As someone else pointed out, that would be a bit of a security risk. With Guest account set to off, then the Username/Password dialogue comes up. As others have said, then you then use your logon name and password and everything is OK. Now, the good thing is that you only have to do the inputing once. On subsequent prints, the iPad remembers your username/password combo.
It didn't work for me because I didn't have a password set up. It didn't like that. So, I put a password on and everything was fine - for the moment!

Is there any way to do airprinting without iTunes on the nagging the printer is physically connected to? For certain reasons the printer in the house is Hooke up to a pc that is not mine, its my housemates and he won't pit iTunes on his machine. My machine has it installed and can see the printer over the network. Can that work?

No, basically.
iTunes loads the AirPrint service. Why doesn't he want to load iTunes?

OK, I'm kind of giving up trying to understand this!
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Simple as that. I wish I knew why.
It seems to be a lottery as to whether the iPad sees my printers or not.
The one thing I do know, however, is that formatting is completely screwed up.
I can have 1 page documents going over to 3 pages. Highlighting, etc. just all missing.
How does it work anyway? I thought it communicated through the OS to the printer driver, but obviously not.

Sorry to keep banging on here, but I think Airprint needs some serious work. Maybe it's iTunes till being in beta, I don't know, but I just tried the same files in 'Print n Share' and they all print perfectly from the same printer via the iPad that Airprint was messing up. All formatting retained, highlights and all.

Printing went fine BUT I am disappointed that iTunes beta needs to be installed on the computer which the printer is connected to.. At work iTunes obviously isn't going to be installed so printing from my iPad here at work is a no go..

You say printing went fine. Have you tried printing any files with formatting highlights, boxes, different colours, etc.? Does the print look the same as if you did it from your PC?
The iTunes thing is annoying. I guess it seems unlikely that MS will allow a Windows Update to facilitate Apple though.

You could always ask your IT dept. Since iTunes doesn't even need to be running for the AirPrint service to work, they might go for it.

I'm printing!

Just wanted to share what I did... So I use Windows 7, got my HP printer hooked up to my laptop... all I did about the username and password thing is enter my user name exactly how it shows when your computer first starts up where it asks you for your password to get into your user account, I entered my first name then space and then my last name (example: Susan Baker) then whatever password I use to get into my user account and that was it. I was printing! I've been printing for the last hour just to test it out! Its wonderful! Unfortunately, if you don't use a password to get into your user account when you first start Windows, I have no clue. I would suggest your network password. :(

Oh and I no longer have iTunes 10.1 installed on my laptop. I didn't like it b/c it kept freezing up so I uninstalled it and put iTunes 10.0.1 back on until the actual iOS 4.2 comes put for iPad. YES I know that I won't be able to update songs and stuff on my iPad because of this but I rarely update that anyway and I download all my apps directly from my iPad. So iTunes 10.1 is NOT required on the computer from which your printer is connected to.

Thanks!

Hey guys I have a n00bish question that I haven't seen answered yet (if it is, please direct me to the response)

Are you able to print wirelessly to a wireless printer without it being connected to my computer? I'm a student, and I have a laptop and an iPad, and I want to pick up a wireless printer.

Once 4.2 comes out, can I just send prints straight from my iPad to the printer? Or do I need this whole iTunes 10.1 and OS X 10.6.5 to be able to do this?

I'm confused. In OS X does my MacBook Pro need to be running 24-7 for me to be able to print to my networked printers whenever I want?

If so, that's pretty dumb because if I'm chillin' on my iPhone, there's a 99.9% chance that the lid on my MBP is closed. And if my MBP is on, why wouldn't I just print documents/emails/webpages from there?

Guys, after several months experiencing printing on the iPad these are my conclusions. They are based purely on my experience and may not apply to everyone.

There are 2 ways of printing on the iPad:

1) via Apps like Printcentral or Print n Share. These apps work well in my opinion. They
  • print to any printer connected to your network via Weprint. Results are excellent and formatting is preserved well.
  • Print directly to any HP wi-fi printer without the need for your computer to be on. HP only as the apps have the HP SDK built-in. Quality is OK for basic documents, but is messed up when more complex formatting is involved.
2) Airprint. For me, this is flaky. Sometimes it sees my printers are other times it doesn't. Literally, I can be sitting in the same position and my printers will show on Airprint, and then a minute later (with no activity on my computer) they are not seen. 'No printers found'.
  • is flaky
  • despite what has been said, it doesn't need iTunes to be running as the Airprint service is running all the time. (It does need iTunes 10.1 beta to be installed though on Windows systems.)
  • doesn't need a Guest Account setup either. Just enter your logon Username and Password once
  • when it does print, it doesn't handle formatting - highlights, colouring, tables, etc. - at all well
  • quality is fine for uncomplicated, basic documents
  • prints directly to only 3 HP e-printers. This will probably improve over time as more manufacturuers make e-printers to be Airprint-compatible, but we'll have to wait and see.

for me, printing via the Apps is a much better option at the moment. It just works, and the quality (especially via Weprint) is superior to Airprint.

I can't get it to work at all. 4.2GM on my ipad, 10.6.5 on my macbook, and itunes 10.1.

ipad simply doesnt find any printers. Printer is IP based, and printer sharing is tunrned on through osx for it. It doesnt even find the acrobat pdf printer, and I have seen video's of people who can even see that.

I know my ipad can talk to my macbook because the remote app works fine.

Is there something i'm missing?

Might explain it. See what the release version does.

Thats what i'm hoping. :)

This would be a really usefull feature for me at work. When i'm at meetings or different sites my macbook is always on so being able to quickly print off emails or documents would be excellent

I cant get it to print to my Xerox Workcentre. It just sits at contacting printer. (it is shared over ip printing)

Yes, well, if you read the link I posted then we all won't have to worry about it anymore because it's been cancelled for Windows and Mac.
Let's hope that's wrong.
