I got my AirTag yesterday and opened it today to start using it. When I pulled the tab out, it chimed and prompted me to connect to it on my phone. After tapping connect, it immediately says that I need to replace the battery and only gives me the option to exit setup. How annoying.

Did anyone else’s AirTag come with a dead battery?

Squeeze with two thumbs and turn counterclockwise to open. Be sure there is no plastic left that is blocking the connection. Batteries are easily replaced for a buck or two. I would at least try another battery to confirm.

I opened it up and couldn’t find anything. It’s just irksome that I have to make a reservation to exchange it (not available until Tuesday) or alternatively go buy a battery for it.

what date is on the box? I wonder is it one of the year old ones? Could be that they have been in storage and the battery somehow drained. Otherwise pop in a new one and see if it works correctly? If not send it back.

Sounds like you got a dud battery since they're not actually meant to power up at all until you remove the plastic coating, but yeah those batteries are ultra cheap. You can get multipacks off Amazon for a few quid. Might as well give that a go before going through the whole RMA process.
