Just bought an AirTag and it doesn’t give a separation alert until I’m about 1/4 mile away. What experiences do others have? It’s not much use at that distance. Apple support suggested a few things but it hasn’t made much difference. Anybody any ideas? Thinking of buying a Chipolo instead.

Same experience here. Maybe not 1/4 mile, but still a large distance. Sometimes I'll (intentionally) leave something in my car while shopping, but don't get the notification until I'm across the parking lot and in the back of the store. Also, at airports...I put one in my luggage and left it with family while I went to get food. Didn't get the notification until I was way at the other end of the airport.

I definitely wouldn't rely on AirTags for immediate separation alerts. It's nice if you left something behind at the office or a friend's house. But if you left something behind at TSA at an airport, you could already be boarded on the plane, or at the other end and don't have time to go back to get it.

If you want something more immediate, a bluetooth tracker would probably better, as your phone will detect when the bluetooth connection breaks and notify you. (AirTags are not actually paired to your iPhone, like many people seem to think.)

Thinking of sending it back and trying Chipolo One instead as separation alerts are probably the most important think for me. I could try the Chipolo One Spot which uses the Find My Device IOS system but not sure that it would be much better than the AirTag.

I think the 'Chipolo ONE' would be the one you'd want to use (and use the Chipolo app). The 'Chipolo ONE Spot' cannot be used with their app; it's basically an AirTag made by Chipolo. Anything using the Find My network will have poor-ish separation alerts, since you are basically relying on the network to detect that you left it behind (and it doesn't really have the resolution of few tens of feet for quicker notifications).

Another potential benefit of the Chipolo ONE, is that you can share its location with friends/family. You can't do that with the Chipolo ONE Spot or AirTags.

Great. Thank you for that. Just ordered a Chipolo One and will give it a go
