Anyone had experience with this pinging it gives off after 3 days? I plan on leaving my dog (airtag collar) with a friend for a week and was hoping I would not have to take it off/disable it..

Exactly my same scenario. I was actually planning on taking the tag off the collar... OR leaving my iPad at my friend's house so I'm "with" the tag in some fashion. Not sure if the latter would work though.

If your friend has an iPhone why not pair the tag with them while your away ?
I'm not the OP... but in my case my friend is a Pixel user. If she hadn't been able to take the dog, then I'd put her in a kennel (well a fancy dog hotel) where I also could not ask random kennel workers to pair it either.

Given how easy it is to disable the speaker, I wonder how long it will be before Apple pushes an update to detect the missing speaker. Should be pretty easy to detect in software due to the change in impedance the device should experience.

Would you really need to track your dog in a kennel ? 🤔

Well if it were a standard Kennel no. But the one we've used is kindof a dog-hotel. They have decent sized rooms for the dogs to sleep in, then during the day they take them out for walks, and into a large play area / open field. My dog could easily escape. Again.. the kennel usecase is minimal, mostly I'd like to be able to track the dog if she escapes from my friend she will be staying with.

Just removed my AirTag speaker magnet following the video. Total time to remove the AirTag speaker and reassemble was under 5 min. I only used a small eyeglass screwdriver to pry it open.

I may buy two more to try this.
  1. First one to try to open, then stab myself in the hand with the eyeglass screwdriver...whist completely destroying the airtag in the process.
  2. Second one to try again after I come back from the ER... to then place it on my dog for the trip.

Shouldn't be that bad... I wasn't going to use the Xacto knife like in the video for the same reasons as you. 😂
