AirTag's detection vs connection range?

There's a lot of range tests in various articles and YouTube videos, but I haven't found any info on how far they can be detected by other Apple devices.

I found these two technical statements from this article:

• Transmits BLE advertisement every 2 seconds when away from its owner's device
• BLE connection interval of 1 second when near its owner's device

I know it's using the same Bluetooth transmitter for both of these "modes", but could the advertisements be tracked even further than the two-way connection required to use the play sound feature and so on?
