I can see using them to track a dog with a hefty collar, but every time I put a collar on my cat, he would come home without it. He is microchipped, so he can be identified. He likes to eat, so he knows where he lives.

Hope someone can make an airtag holding collar.
I actually found this! I love the style and it seems the tag won't fall. I already ordered mine in Blue! :)

Looks great, but a bit too fancy for my dog. She is spoiled enough!

I have one on my cat, who roams around the neighbourhood. So far it's been good. I'm able to see the general area he's in (lots of the locals must have iOS) and then call him and he'll come. It's not working to pin him down to a exact location but it's way better than other trackers I've tried.

Wouldn't you want the white part to show outwards being that is the speaker and it won't scratch the stainless steel as easy?

So it looks like the biggest limitation is that only one person can ever track a family's pets. Seems like a pretty dumb limitation as it rules out AirTags for anything shared like a shared set of keys, luggage, car, bike etc. So while AirTags for pets will 'work', you have to decide who in the family to pair the pet's AirTag with.
Maybe this can get sorted out in a software update, but in the meantime, I could imagine a couple of workarounds.

1. create a "family" Apple ID that everyone can log into to track a missing item. Sure, it's a pain the butt, but it would get the job done.

2. if you need two people to be able to track a single item, then put two AirTags on it. Apple would love this option as it's another $30 in revenue.

But yeah, you're right. They should have some way to allow for AppleID's on the same Family to be able to track everyone else's stuff. Maybe even have the option that the AirTag owner can toggle on/off who can track it.

Thanks for this video.
This is why the tag suits me. I live in highly populated city.

Only concern is if parents watch the dog for a few days and it starts making sounds. If there is a way to disable the alerts while they have them. It be great.
You could remove the AirTag before dropping your dog off at your parent's place. If they have iPhones, they could put an AirTag paired to their iPhone on your dog.

Anyone thinking about putting an AirTag on your pets collar?
I got one on his harness, mostly to track him on his walk with the wife, she hasn't been wearing her watch 5 and sometimes it is nice to know where they went incase he sits down and won't budge, then I can come and rescue them. Also if his harness is buried under stuff in the house and finally to wake him up if he is goofing around in the back yard and ignoring my pleas to come to go in. for some reason he figures it out and comes over to me.

Good question! I asked the producer and you can put the tag both ways. I orderer a custom AirTag with my dog's name engraved so I'll put the stainless steel part inward so it's protected and the name shows :). It should work..

I got a cheap holder from Amazon that is covered in leather on both sides. It looks cool, but the sound is definitely a lot more muted. I have holders that are open on one side only, and when I put the stainless steel side inwards (the white side uncovered) it sounds a lot louder than the other way around. Although for pets, maybe you don't want to spook them with a loud sound... :)

I don’t see the value for a pet. If you really care about the pet, you can get them chipped at the vet.
Getting them chipped at the vet doesn't really help only if a person who finds your dog is willing to bring it to a vet who can look up the owner. The airtag can actually help you locate your dog and sometimes time is of the essence especially if it's late at night and there are coyotes or other prey animals..

You really think an airtag is gonna track your dog down in a space where coyotes are out?

Depending where you live. In LA (or other parts in Southern California) they are all around the neighborhood. So, the answer is yes.

you are vastly overestimating the Bluetooth range of these things. The iPhone inside someone’s house isn’t tracking down fluffy for you before the coyote has her for dinner.

Also, the airtag isn’t constantly pinging for a location. If you’re lucky you’ll get an update every 15 minutes or so. Good luck.

I had to go to the post office and wanted to see with my 8Plus phone how the tag on the dog harness at home performed. It said where it was 10 minutes earlier . I tried the lost function and sounded the sound and it said it was out of range. So I am wondering how accurate the thing is. I can't find out where it is now, and it definitely would be a loser if my pooch wandered off. Have you ever tracked a dog on the run? So I don't know if those other functions are better on the iphone 11 or 12. I have been on the fence about upgrading my phone, but if it is only for this airtag, it isn't worth it

I've got two young kids, if I were to add AirTags to say a necklace or something... i
Years ago, when our first son was but a toddler, we were at the state fair and he disappears in an instant. We were panicked of course and were running around in a mad frenzy looking for him, thinking someone had snatched him. We eventually did find him (he had just seen something that interested him and took off away from us while we were distracted). Anyway, having something like an AirTag on a young child would make such incidents much easier to deal with I'd think.

I've not had any success with my AirTag on my cat. Because it dangles, she is forever pawing away at it, especially when she is lying down and it sort of sits there right in front of her chin. I looked at the FollowPaw collars but they're for dogs not little kitties. Floris's suggestion of the Wairco one could work, but right now I am waiting for someone to come up with something silicon to hold the AirTag flush to my cat's collar.

This whole discussion made me bite the bullet and go ahead and buy a Fi collar for my escape artist dog. I haven't ordered one for my Golden, because he just really doesn't want to be away from my side. I'll let you guys know how it goes, if you are interested!

I as well. As you know, cats are much different than dogs. LOL! 😹

I have two Rottweilers, so I can’t put AirTags in any kind of case that dangles from the collar. They like to play and they bite each others collars and dangly bits that hang off them (not to mention each others‘ legs, head, faces, etc). I need something that can survive a rottie jaw. Rotties are among the top dogs in bite strength. LOL

Got an email pushing this earlier this week...
