Aldente vs “on hold” charging?

I will be using my new MBP 14 (getting delivered Tuesday!!) 80% of the time running through a Studio Display at a desk, with the potential of going days or sometimes even weeks without any notable use on battery.

So…Aldente? I’ve been reading about it and have heard some mixed things…recalibrating the battery is needed, etc.

Right now I’m seeing my MBA sitting at 80% and “on hold” from charging, saying it’ll be fully charged by this evening.

If OSX has already learned my charging behavior and is acting to maximize the life of my battery…is Aldente necessary? I’d like to not have to run 3rd party software to deal with this.

Or…is Aldente a game changer that I should be using given my setup?

Would pick Aldente, I have never seen "on hold" on my MBP 14 for the last 12 months. Quite disappointing.

I gave up using the free version of Al Dente because it kept charging past the 75% limit I set. It seems like a good product based on what others have said, but I couldn't get it to work consistently. I have seen the macOS on hold message and I'm satisfied that it's actually learning my charging behavior.

I may give the Aldente Pro version a try. For a $20 lifetime license…not a big deal. The pro features (clamshell support, calibration mode, etc) seem worth a pretty small one and done cost.

New MBP arrives Tuesday…so stoked!

The newest version has automatic discharge if it detects battery percentage exceeding the set value.

Since I updated to Ventura, my battery is 80% on his own.

I have a week off, so no college and work where I need to use my macbook, so it’s wired since last Saturday.

Before the update it would sit at a steady 100%, but since the update last Monday, the MacBook discharged itself to 80% and it sits there since then.

I can’t find this in the release notes, but did Apple change this in Ventura?

To add to this discussion:

I've set up Battery for Apple Silicon and so far I'm super happy with the performance. Much simpler app than Al Dente, doesn't occupy the dock and is completely free. However, as of this time it doesn't seem to be working for clamshell mode (as noted in the app), but I'm still experimenting with the use. Perhaps once it's down to 80% I can close the lid and it'll return to on hold charging from the MacOS Optimised Battery Charging hold.
