DJay "Pro" has absolutely no place in the pro Dj business, if you have no insight into that business than don't jump to assumptions that make you all look a bit silly wit your "arguments"

There are 4 main player in the business: Serato, Pioneer Rekordbox, Virtual DJ and Traktor, in that order concerning market share. In clubs pioneer CDJ's are the de facto standard, you bring your set on a usb stick and have your gig, it's expected that you know your stuff with cdj's. dj software and controller is more a mobile-dj thing, and even there I have never seen any dj who used djay pro for more than a back-up solution. Djay "Pro" ist a toy for consumers for their parties wo want to feel a bit "pro", but for the professional environment it lacks several key features.

Here is my input, subscription is better for the software company but not for the end user... why?

We published 96 real estate magazines at one point and while Adobe, back in the day was outright purchased at $1,500/station we would purchase two stations, so $3,000.

Now here is the kicker, we didn't need "new" photoshop features, new indesign (we used Quark), or illustrator feature. We used the same setup for over 5 years or $3,000/5=$600/year for 2 Station!.

With today subscription it's $80/Station/Month (remember we are a business here, don't want to lie or cheat the system) or $960/yr/Station or $1,920/yr/2 stations or $1,320 MORE/year or $9,600 for the exact same 5 years!!

So young boys and girls that didn't pay attention in math class, you are spending $6,600 MORE then us wiser old folks... and you complain about money, hummmm I wonder why!?

PLEASE DO ME A FAVOR AND COMPARE CS5 Photoshop with today's Photoshop and see what the REAL differences are... NOT MUCH!

Oh but but... yeah it has a few features but 80% of people do not use those new fancy features and do you really need them or really can't do "that" (what ever the feature is) in the older version of PS with a few extra steps?

Notice how my grammar is actually broken, so you younger folks will actually read this because one big paragraph is a little to much to consume.

While it's great in theory, the software companies win on subscription and like someone else said, it makes for lazy programmers, less feature sets, fewer major updates, etc.

Oh and BTW, YES I STILL OWN AND USE MY OLD PHOTOSHOP WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY FOR IT! (Which mathematically means my cost is even lower!)

Djay is a fab app, extremely well designed and slick. However, I have no interest in yet another subscription-based service.

What this has once again highlighted is the fundamental problem with the App Store that it does not have the ability to do paid-for upgrades. Users expect perpetually free updates from an app they may have only paid 99p for 5+ years ago. This isn't sustainable on developers. Its the same reason that myMovies 3 has just been released (the DVD and Bluray collection app) and myMovies2 development has ceased. Both are paid for apps.

There really should be a way of making an app that after a set period of time (maybe a minimum of 2 years) can ask purchases to either pay a reduced "upgrade" fee or else they no longer get any more app updates.

"dj software and controller is more a mobile-dj thing"

"but for the professional environment it lacks several key features."

Please enlighten us O' wise one ? Most "professional" club DJ's are still just A>B mixers or they are using CDJ', with the vast majority of DJ's rarely even using hot cues in either software or hardware.

The desktop version has not been "lacking" anything in quite some time.

The iOS version did lack support for most controllers which had a workaround (now fixed since this release and now it is in-line with the desktop version for features).

"Mobile" DJ's (The ones making a living out of DJ'ing) are far more "professional" and far more in number in the true sense of the word than a guy who plays a festival or mega club every weekend.

It also does many things other software does not e.g. 4k Video, Sample Sequencer, "Proper" key transposition (cents)

Plus, I have not had the iOS or Desktop versions crash EVER in 5 years of use even on a 7 year old tablet and 9 year old Macbook (more than I can say for some of the CDJ's I've come across)

FYI: I have been a club DJ since 1996, a DJ software user since 2004. I've tried just about everything else out there and have had licenses for all the big ones except Rekordbox. I have current licenses for Traktor and VDJ but i'd take the iOS version Djay over them after this update (for now).

Features look great on paper, but many of them e.g. NI's Stems go almost completely unused by all but a tiny subset of folk.

At the end of the day, its the music not the medium.

I'll be the first to admit I jumped the gun - I had not got to the updated pages and was still reading some of the old material after buying (sorry, "subscribing").

YES you are right, its got midi mapping and it nice, and its simple ! (finally)
YES they updated the stock mappings across the board to include just about everything under the sun ! - Nice
YES its officially AWESOME !

Thank you Algoriddim - looks like you have listened.

I wont say I'm crackers about the subscriptions, but if it means getting more frequent updates and better features I can live with $50 a year.

Spotify / Beatport / Apple Music offline would be the icing on the cake - just hope it doesn't take as long to implement as the midi mapper :p

Great to hear! Thanks for trying and reporting back

Which iOS device are you using? Could you elaborate on your use case? Would also be interested to hear about your hardware setup.

2018 iPad 9.7 (non pro) working smooth as butter with a Vestax VCI 100 mkII controller. I might try on my iPad min mk1 for kicks later. It did work with djay pro as well but formatted since I got the new one.

Subscriptions are great for consumers.
They support true innovation and allow products to live on for generations and remain sustainable.
I encourage all developers to adopt this model as it allows us to support them and ensure our incredible iOS ecosystem remains the most lucrative and high quality software ecosystem in the entire world.
