Thank you for all the input.

BTW: Fenderbass-I am a bass player, too. Nice to meet you.

If I don't put the SSD in the primary spot, I will lose the benefit of SATA 3, so I shouldn't go with one of the hot new SSDs like the Vertex 3.

Why not replace the default 5200 drive with your SSD? That's what I'm planning on doing.

I intend on using the drive for apps, the OS, and my audio and MIDI files, and everything else. Unless of course I end up getting an SDXI for the OS and apps or for the audio files. Though I wonder if SDXI can benefit from TRIM support (which seems not to be an option there, at least ATM).

@sawxray
I have pretty much the same system: 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2 with 750GB... although I have about 20GB left, LOL

I chose a new Intel SSD (Intel 320 Series). I'm going to put the SSD in my Optical Drive Slot.
I got an 80GB drive, so I can keep the OS + Apps + some Documents on the SSD and all my media on the HDD.
:D

Yes. I saw a chart on here that looked like it was copied from Anandtech it showed that Intel being the most reliable, with OCZ being the least reliable. That was measuring by failure rate.

The chart is at the top of this page. Intel looks far more reliable than the others listed.

I am real careful with my computer. How much of a shock does it take to disrupt the HD, should it be in the Optibay/Data Doubler slot?

I think you all are saying to put the OS and apps on the SSD. What about music and photos? I would guess that would make them significantly faster (I don't know for sure), but that means I need a significantly larger SSD. My current HD is 750 GB, which gives me a very nice capacity.

I can't figure out what the whiner was talking about, either...

Cheers!

What do you mean you will loose the benefit of sata 3? Both the optical bay and HDD spot are both sata 3. I have a mid 2009 macbook pro and it says in the system profiler that it has 3.0 GB/s

In regards to the amount of damage, it doesnt take much if it moves or shakes while it is reading the drive. As well as risk of loosing drive you may also have other problems like some people have had such as heat and louder vibrations, especially with a 7200 rpm drive like I have.

I personnally have just os and apps, music will have no benfit of having it on the ssd and unless you are editing it, the same goes for pictures, Unless you are actually edit these files there will be no benfit to having files on ssd

You are confusing terms. The 2011 MBP has a SATA III connection in the HDD slot and SATA III can transfer data up to 6 gigabits per second (Gbit/s). Pre-2011 MBP have a SATA II class connection and can transfer data at up to 3 Gbit/s. The "3 Gigabit" entry you are seeing on your 2009 means it is a SATA II class connection.

Here is more info.

I would think viewing photos would be much faster on the SSD. I put a SSD in my 2011 MBP and even once iPhoto is open, then photos can be viewed more quickly with them on the SSD.

This.

I don't know about Intel much, but if I choose Intel, will it work in my mac? Seems the 510 is giving problems with 30s+ spinning beachballs.

Aside: It is perturbing to have multiquote feature that is broken. All that is needed is "quote" and having that perform a deep or "multi" quote "tree". I suppose they could hire a competent web developer but that would require knowing how to recognize one.

Not too sure about the new series as I never bothered to read up on those.

Multiquote seems to work fine for me?
