OK bear with me do to the fact that I don't know to much about Apple systems.
A friend of mine moved files into some box to burn to cd's and a msg came up stating that they would not fit on the CD's so she moveed them back out of the box and then a Msg came up stating that the files with that name already existed on the system do you want to replace them? Thinking why not they were the same files so she picked YES. Now the file show a "chick mark" next to them which states that there "Alias" and when she open the files there blank.
Are they file gone or can she get them back??
Please Help!
Thanks.

An alias is a like a shortcut on a pc. However alias files usually have the word "alias" at the end.. except when are burning a disc. When you drag files into a burn folder it creates alias but without the extension. So you may be left with shortcut files. If you do an apple+I on the file to get info it should tell you the file type.

So if it shows that it's a shortcut then is there a way to recover the file?

Not if those shortcuts overwrote the original files. It's possible to have an alias with no file attached.

Replaced by Alias file

Sigh...I've recently faced the same problem as well. And all my italian trip photos are being replaced by an empty alias file. Is there anyway to retrieve the original folder at all?

Hmmm. Lost files.... I hope that everyone gets their copy of Leopard and time machine.

Backup, Backup, Backup

It is very possible to have an alias file without the word alias, so when you moved the files back over to their original places you most likely overwrote the originals with empty aliases from the burn folder. You file are gone... you can get some data recovery software for free and some good ones at the Apple store and other stores to try to get your files back.

When you do shop around for that data rescue stuff make sure you check out some of those very inexpensive HDDs and some free, opensource backup software.... they will go along way until Leopard and Time Machine are made available.

Sorry about your lost files. :(
