Alias or Shortcuts

I need to make a shortcut to a folder, i would like the shortcut on the desktop.

No idea how to do this, saw the make alias but its greyed out for the folder.

Which folder are you trying to make an alias of?

Use your mouse and drag the folder in question to the Desktop, then before letting go hold down the command and alt keys and release the mosue button while still holding down those keys. You should see the alias icon while doing this. You'll need to have permission to the folder as well.
