I am trying to find a WiFi router OR set-up that will let me do the following:

1) Have a fast WiFi speed
2) Back-up my MacBook's HD via Time Machine wirelessly
3) Stream my iTunes to a stereo

From what I can tell:
- All of the Apple routers can do 1 as they all offer Draft N
- AirPort Extreme w/an external HD can do 2 for cheaper than a Time Capsule
- Only an AirPort express seems to do 3, but it cannot do 2

Any suggestions for a set-up or device that can do all three? I don't mind buying a router plus external HD. Form factor is not an issue.

i would get an AirPort Extreme for the fast wifi and time machine backup wireless and an AirPort Express to stream iTunes to a stereo
that is my throught

afaik there are none that can do all three, i suppose picking the one that fits your needs better is what you should go with. ie if wireless backup is a bigger priority go for the extreme, if wireless music is more important go for the express. or if its cost, go with the express.

AFAIK, there is no non-Apple router that can do AirTunes, only the AE. Also, I'm not sure that any non-Apple router can do wireless backup through Time Machine (does anyone else know this?)

There is no non-Apple router that can do Time Machine backups. This is probably due to the fact that there is no non-Apple router that can read the file system Macs use.

Your best bet is to get an Airport Extreme with an external HD (or a Time Capsule) and then get an Airport Express to do the stereo part.

Time Capsule is also a router, so you can have
- Time Capsule (time machine and wifi)
- Airport Express (optical audio out)
