Then it really doesn't matter much if it is carrier unlocked. If you are hoping to take a Verizon iPhone 5 to any other carrier in the US, T-Mobile USA, AT&T and use LTE, you are SOL. A better comparison would be the iPhone 5S, which has compatible LTE bands across US carriers, Sprint excluded.

Correct. Locked or unlocked is determined at time of activation based on info on Apple's servers. So during a purchase that info is updated based on subsidized or not.

Is the original post I replied to, so everything I said holds true, i don't know why you are trying to dispute whether the iPhone 5 is unlocked or not.

The fact is that ALL Verizon iPhones are unlocked since the 5, subsidy/contract or not. It is a policy. If you are on contract, and u port your number, u just get hit with the ETF. It works out of the box.

Hell, I took my Verizon iPhone 5 to T-Mobile to get the $30 prepaid plan using HSPA+ speeds, worked out great.

All Phones Purchased *Device Only* are Unlocked

I am not disputing unlocked or not. Stop trying to change the point. I am replying to your post:

All Verizon iPhones 5 are unlocked no matter what. For Verizon, it is mandated by the FCC, for whatever reason. They even have fine print that reads all 4G LTE smartphones are carrier unlocked. All T-Mobile iPhones from the Apple Store are unlocked, I'm not sure the case from the T-Mobile store since I know my Note 3 at full price was not unlocked.

It doesn't matter in the US if the Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked for LTE, since its' LTE will only work on mostly Verizon in the US. It doesn't share the same LTE bands as the iPhone 5C or 5S to work on AT&T or T-Mobile LTE.

So: I just ordered a 128 SG 6 using my 2 year upgrade from AT&T. If I understand this correct it's locked. How long do I need to wait before I request it to be unlocked? What resources do I use to do this?

You will have to wait until the contract is up before AT&T will unlock it.

... I am not changing any point. Ok, let me describe it in a different example b/c you don't understand the point I am trying to make.

Sprint iPhones are locked. And they, as far as I know, do not unlock it for use on any other domestic carrier. So if you buy a Sprint iPhone 5, 5S, 5C, 6 or 6+ it will not work out of the box on AT&T or T-Mobile, it is not GSM unlocked.

Conversely, Verizon iPhones 5, 5S, 5C, 6, and 6+ are all unlocked (GSM unlocked). It doesn't matter if the 5 supports AT&T, T-Mobile or other GSM LTE bands. It IS unlocked. And the reason it is unlocked is because it is a 4G LTE Verizon phone. The FCC has mandated that, since the iPhone 5, Verizon unlock all of its 4G LTE phone - not to be confused with being an iPhone 5 rule.

Anywy, what's the point? There is no such thing as a LOCKED Verizon iPhone 6 or 6+, because ALL Verizon iPhones have been UNLOCKED since iPhone 5. Furthermore it doesn't matter if you purchase at the Apple Store or the Verizon Store, on contract or off contract, subsidized or EDGE... iPhone 6 and 6+ is unlocked period.

Correct - Only because AT&T royally screwed up my 2 year contract renewal and I had to pay full price for my 128 plus. Cost me freaking $1100.00 bucks !!!

When I plugged my phone into iTunes it said "Your Phone is Unlocked"

I went back to Apple yesterday after AT&T finally fixed my contract renewal in their systems and Apple told me that I can't exchange my phone for the same phone because Apple burns out the IMEI number....So basically I would have to exchange it for another phone and nothing was in stock.

Expensive error for me :(

in the same situation. solution: order another iphone plus with the discount and sell it at cost on craigslist or something and you come out the same. even better if supply is still low and you can get an extra $100 for it

You were talking about the iPhone 5, not iPhone 6 or any other model. My comment is only regarding the iPhone 5, not any other model.

Verizon full-price/contract free is unlocked. You don't have to get a contract with it if you buy it full-price.

and how is this possible ? i tried to buy a Verizon 6 plus at retail without a contract at a local apple store and they would let me.
I was told that I would have to get a 2 year plan in order for them to sell me a Verizon & AT&T phone.

Then you ran into that "resistant" Best Buy. They seemed reluctant to sell me one without a contract either, but eventually relented.
