I think they'll just stop selling the old phones in the EU. iPhone SE 4, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 will be all that's available.

The old phones remain good competition against lower priced Android devices. Apple doesn't have to stop selling old devices already introduced into the market before late 2024. There's no reason they should. SE4 won't likely be available until 2025.

The Lightning port on the 2nd Generation iPad Pro did support USB 3.0.
This was done using a hack. Notice the camera adapters were the only devices to support USB 3.0. There were no lightning to USB 3.0 cables. The adapters had a chip in them that would convert a custom serial protocol from the lightning port to USB 3.0.

It really was time to move away from lightning. Moving to an industry-standard connector was the best choice. Look how many devices can plug into the iPhone 15 series. We are in a much better place now.

The migration from the 30-pin dock connector to Lightning took a few years, worldwide they were still shipping devices with it till late 2014, and in some markets up until late 2016

We're down to a couple 2nd gen AirPods, my wife's iPhone 12 Pro and an old iPad mini.

Nearly all of their peripherals. Still baffled in why the Magic Keyboard, mouse, and trackpad didn’t get updated with the iMac.
So that they can sell the USB-C peripherals separately in Feb/March 2024 and get a bunch of extra sales from those recent iMac buyers.

I still have a classic iPod which lives on a Sony clock radio with a 30 pin connector on top in my office. Still going strong.

Let me introduce you to the world of better computer mice from Logitech...

That’s not the point. The post said stop moaning and don’t buy a lightening device. But Apple doesn’t offer an alternative I can buy if its the first party experience I want.

No, it's not. Lightning does not have enough pins to support higher speeds. The only way to resolve that would be to come up with a "Lightning 2" and at that point, why not just move to the industry standard?
“Speed” is just another point. Other points are waterproofing, durability, size, etc. A good connector is a one which is better suited for its use case - no one thinks we need PCI on a phone because it’s faster.

And all of those cables are still in demand for users who not purchased new hardware recently, and they will continue to be in demand for years yet.

“In September 2023, over a decade later, Apple caught up with the rest of the industry and removed the Lightning port from its flagship iPhone 15 series, replacing it with USB-C, the widely adopted standard used in electronics for connectivity and charging.”

Apple caught up? Sure, but wasn‘t Lightning ahead of the competition for years when it came out?
