It IS a bit disheartening that people are still getting book spine screens, considering the panels are presumably completely different than the original Air, being laminated etc.

Mine is pretty damn good, but my 4 is absolute perfection - might swing by Apple today or tomorrow and pick up another Air 2 and if that's not perfect, then just return it and keep my current one - it's really quite nice as it is - but it would also be nice to be sheer perfection like my 4.

The screen uniformity issues come from the new screen tech they've used since the Air came out, it uses less LED's so can result in uneven back lighting. It's the same tech in the Air 2 just connected to the screen. Hopefully being more compact and closer to the screen will help but it's still the same tech at heart. I will say there's less people complaining about the Air 2 than there was the Air at this stage but it's still early.

I've had my share of problems with Apple stuff, but I've had very few issues with iPhones, zero issues with any computer (8 out of 8 perfect), no issues with a ton of iPods, routers, etc.

The iPad seems to be problematic. A large LCD packed into such a confined space, meant to be held so close to the face. (a 46" TV would never undergo such scrutiny).

That's a big challenge for any manufacturer. But then consider that we're talking about producing millions of these things. The only other manufacturer that comes close is Samsung, and they have similar issues.

But the question is: why the iPad 1 and the iPad 4 (the two that I have had) had a perfect screen? Is this the progress?

Think about it, usually complainers will post and those who enjoy their iPad are happy using it. Plenty of people including myself are enjoying our nice new iPads

Will give you advice, and I am not Apple fan, despite currently using few of their products. Buy your device and just use it. Don't try looking for defects, because you will find them. If you find something wrong during usage then return it and replace it. When I i bought my current rMBP 13 inch I was on Macrumors reading about people being frustrated about screen (LG v Samsung sourced screen) and got caught up in it. Started looking for stuff that is wrong. Did not find anything. Just buy it and enjoy it. Don't waste your time.

OMG! I saw this threads title and thought someone brought it back from 2010 or 2011 or 2012 or 2013.

Funny how it's always "this years" screens are terrible and always judged so by the same people or types.

" (In fact, the Air 2 is so thin that you can depress the screen from the back of the device. You know how poking an LCD with a fingertip produces a temporary distortion, a small puddle of color? The same thing happens on the Air 2 if you press it from behind—there's no reason to think this will damage the device.)"

Here's a thought: Don't buy it!

Absolutely agree! I won't!

And Apple wonder why iPad sales are declining... Defective screens and the same old limited (iPhone) operating system.

Look mum, I can can do nothing of any magnitude really fast. Well done honey, but wouldn't you rather slowly do things of value..? Hmm, good point, maybe Apple should put more effort in to their crappy iPad os than shaving millimetres from the thickness of the shell!?

I'm unsure what your point is unless you are King Kong. I don't know too many people who squeeze the back of their iPad. Personally I hold mine on it's sides, as intended. Anyway, that has nothing to do with screen defects, but thinness of the device.

iPad sales are declining because of oversaturation of the tablet market. Not because OCD people need to use a microscope to find one pixel out of place.

for the past 4 ipads I have purchased I have never had a lcd problem.

the ipad air 2 wifi-cellular that I got yesterday passed the bleed/dead pixel test with flying colors. the screen is amazing, crisp, clear and vivid.

Actually I was referring to iOS being a very basic and limited operating system! But at least there is a jailbreak for 8.1 now so maybe third party developers can expand the limited functionality of iOS, like they always do...

That has an impact on the screen! Causing defects...!?

No. A defect is something that occurs w/o user abuse or normal use. Pressing HARD on an iPad is not normal. Hold it light like a baby and you are find. Grip it like you are hanging on a ledge and well, sure what do you expect? Apple makes no claim the Air is ruggedized for combat use.

This.

If you hold your ipad lightly, normally, and still get that defects then you have to claim your warranty with Apple. But if you press then the distortion happens...well you could try to press your monitor and see if the same thing happens.

I tried a few iPads in store and none of that happens unless you press it hardly.

Well then how to you account for the iPhone 6 and 6+ breaking iPhone sales records, and the iPhone + being the most popular of all? Most people don't use phones and phones, but handheld computers, which is why large format phones are growing in popularity. That's the real reason iPad sales are slumping plus the fact people don't upgrade them as fast as phones. A lot of people still use iPad 2 and 3s and will until they become unusable.

If I don't see it holding it normally or pressing on the screen while holding it (which is something you do normally), then I say it isn't an issue. I'm sure if I pushed and tried to look for things I could make something happen in every product I own.

If you hold it with your right hand normally and can use the iPad without causing this to happen then I'm OK with that.

There are people on here saying they can see it just by holding it. They're not pressing on it. This worries me.

I've been looking at this forum for a while, and people always say this, that, and something else. Sometimes it's legit, and sometimes it's pure nonsense. I imagine Apple and Samsung both have people posting on here, as well as diehard fans of both companies.

After reading this stuff about pressing on the screen, I figured why not. Actually, I held the sides and pressed on the back. Nothing happened to the display. When then original Mini was first put on display at Best Buy, I saw a kid really pushing on the screen. The screen had that puddle effect while he was pushing, but immediately returned to normal when he released his pudgy finger. I tried it, and the same thing happened. It took more pressure than a reasonable person would use on a tablet, and I bought a Mini the next day (and used it daily for nearly a year).

Sift through the threads and posts, but do so with a HUGE grain of salt. If you see someone making outrageous claims, look at their past posts. If someone joined on launch day, and has made nothing but negative posts, you know something is up. My wife bought an iPhone 5S on launch day last year, and someone started a thread about the compass and level not working properly. We weren't aware it had either of these features, but the thread grew and grew, and had around 1,500 posts after 10 days. I finally gave into the fear that this might through off the GPS, etc, and we returned the phone. A week later, it seemed a software fix solved the "issue". My wife really wanted that phone, and used an HTC until we each bought an iPhone 6 on launch day.

I don't see it when I am holding with my left hand. But if I am pressing on it, I can see it and it is always at that particular spot. Right-side middle area.

I am thinking that probably when people are trying to use it one-handed using their right hand, their four fingers are pressing the back of the iPad to balance it while their thumbs are browsing around on the display. They are accidentally presses the iPad this way thus causing the spots to appear.

I've had two both with a dead pixel. And both suffer from the screen distortion issue. And it's pretty poor to say the least.

Sticking with my Mini R and I'll sit this one out. I sat the last Air out too due to the horrid patchy screens.

The dead pixels are poor QC and components. The screen distortion is Apple's obsession with thin creating a poor design. That'll not be fixed for this one.
