Strange one, this one!

As per the title, all my USB connections are dead! I was using Lightroom with a USB wired Loupdeck +, and had my iPad set up as a second monitor (wired via Thunderbolt), and the Loupdeck went glitchy. Tried trouble shooting it, and then my iPad started dropping out too. I ran the Loupdeck Troubleshooter (an app that loads up from the Loupdeck App), and I was just thinking it'd work. Anyway, so I clicked 'Fix macOS permission issues', which didn't work. I think it was pretty soon after that (but bear in mind I was restarting, reinstalling the Loupdeck app and general troubleshooting) that all USB connections dropped out.

So, none of the Mac Studio's USB ports work (ie printer, microphone, other discs, hub, etc etc). But if I'm able to plug them in via Thunderbolt they work!

In System Settings > Network > Other Services, I've deleted USB, and then added it. Didn't work.

So I'm truly stumped! I'm trying to get a job out the door that I'm using my Mac Studio for, so I'm not keen on reinstalling the macOS.

Has anyone got any ideas?!?!? 😳😵‍💫
Cheers for any help!

I assume you have sone a full shutdown, wait a minute, and then restart. If not, start there. Then try to create a new user account and see if it is has the same problem. Otherwise you may need to reinstall the OS.

Thanks - I did the restart, but not a new user, so I'll try that now (and while I'm at it, restart in safe mode too), I'll get back to you if it works!

Edit:
No - restart nor safe mode worked.

Question - would reinstalling macOS wipe my icc color profiles?
I'm trying to get a job out the door and so I'm loath to go so far as reinstall the os because of all the things that then might happen!

“would reinstalling macOS wipe my icc color profiles?”

I don’t know. Sorry.

OP:

Try to stop and restart USB daemons.
Do this:

Launch terminal

Enter:
sudo launchctl stop com.apple.usbd
(password will be required)

Then...
Enter:
sudo launchctl start com.apple.usbd

No promises...

Thanks Fishrrman and BrianBaughn.

I've done a reinstall of the OS, as well as what you suggested with the Terminal Fishrrman (after the reinstall), neither have helped (though my icc profiles are still working - small victories!)

Screen grabs of both System Settings and also System Report.

One weird thing is that when I have a wired mouse plugged in, and I continually circle the mouse on the mouse mat, the pointer on the screen circles, but every 3 seconds, it stops moving on the screen for about 0.5 seconds. Not sure what that means!

Here are the screen grabs, thanks for your input, appreciate that you replied :)

So - it's fixed!!

And the problem was ... drum roll ... a printer on the USB hub. It was kicking everything off the entire USB network. So despite reinstalling, restarting, safe boot etc etc, nothing worked ... because I just needed to unplug the printer 😳

Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it! Cheers ✌🏽

Hmmm...
What KIND of a printer is this?
This is an unusual question, but does the printer run from USB power? (I've never heard of one that does)

I can't see why having a printer connected would knock down the entire USB bus.
A device (such as a drive) CAN do that, if it requests more "USB power" than the bus can provide.

I'd try the printer with a different cable.
If it STILL "kills the USB", I'd try a cheap powered USB hub between the Mac and the printer.
Or... "Airprint" if the printer is so equipped.

Thanks Fishrrman, and yeah, strange one huh?

So, the printer is a Dymo 450 (not USB powered)

Printer plugged into the hub, all USB peripherals can't connect.
Unplug the printer from the hub, all peripherals suddenly can connect.
Plug the printer into the mac direct, with a variety of cables, all peripherals drop off the USB.
Unplug the printer, and they all come back on line.
Restart the printer, then plug it in, all peripherals stay on line.
... go figure 🤪
