Sure why not. I'll take one model over 4 different models each year.

You are in the minority then. But that’s true of most of the commenters here on MacRumors on just about any topic. All of us (me included) don’t represent the typical consumer wants, needs or desires that Apple addresses so well.

My dad just bought the 10.2” iPad late last year, he wasn’t ever going to buy the 12.9” iPad Pro. He didn’t want something that large or expensive. Should he not have any choices but one?

Apple is trying to address every possible market segment where it makes sense, which is what a well run business should do. If some users have trouble with deciding, that’s on them, not Apple.

I suppose we should have one portable Mac and one desktop Mac to choose from each year as well? Just to be consistent. I’m sure everyone here would be all for that as well, right?

You could run a study among consumers of Apple products and I guarantee you 98% of them just want one model for the iPhone and iPad.

I honestly can no longer keep track of the differences between the three ipad lines.

There are 4 lines, not 3

iPad Pro
iPad Air
iPad
iPad mini

It's gotten ridiculous, I agree. I wish they would have at most 2-3 lines and at most 2 sizes for each product. Maybe the Macbook could have 3 like 13", 15" & 17" but that's it

And each size vary by at least 2 inches, no more of this 1" extra for $100+ more

Agreed, but unless there's a 11" Pro update, seems like maybe too well - would this cannibalize Pro sales? I'm struggling to see the difference:
Pro - 2 more speakers, 120 Hz
Air - faster? (new processor instead of A12Z?)

Touch ID vs. Face ID is a personal preference. Lidar still seems to have no killer apps. Maybe Air would still only be only Pencil 1 compatible?

I've been waiting to replace my 9.7" Pro, and assumed it would be with another Pro. But seems like an Air may be the way to go.

Of course, theyre also releasing two 6.1" OLED phones this year, so 🤷‍♂️

I cant say I get the strategy.

I do think choice is good, but too much choice can definitely cause confusion. I'm surprised they updated the mini when it looked like it was going to disappear. Though I get the sense they're going to let it stagnate for a while again.

iPad Pro (12.9, 11)
iPad Air (10.5, 7.9)
iPad (10.2)
iPad mini

Just bundling the Air and mini together would clean it up. And it would make sense given that they're nearly identical other than screen size.

Maybe if it was still the 1980’s and in Soviet Russia, but not in this day and time. I would argue that 98% of customers now want and expect multiple choices of devices for different use cases. I don’t want some silly, tiny iPhone like some users here so desperately want...I have an iPhone XR, which many people think is “too large”. For me it was the best compromise of size and price as I didn’t want to pay for an iPhone XS Max and could care less about OLED.

So, no, respectfully, 98% of customers do NOT want one model of iPad and one model of iPhone. The Android market bears that out as much, so does the automotive market, the TV market, et al.

The mini is the most specialized of the iPads now among the rest, but it has its place as a niche product, which is why Apple stopped updating it as often. I have had a mini, mini 2 and a mini 4 which have served as a great e-reader, portable computer, entertainment and writing device. I’m waiting to see if Apple updates the mini this year to something like the alleged iPad Air 4 and I’m not the only one. If they do, I’m in. The mini 4, while the perfect size for a variety of tasks, is now showing its age, CPU and DRAM-wise. If Apple wants to call it an Air or a mini, I could care less as long as it doesn’t go away.

Agreed. The 12.9" iPad Pro has been my primary computer for 3+ years now. But I've always loved the mini, especially for casual browsing and book reading. I would love for it to get the Air 4 treatment that's supposedly coming.
