One of my concerns is that Apple doesn’t really advertise when they are dropping a model so how will I know to stock up on a smaller device? As long as the SE keeps evolving it’s the best bet for small iPhone folks.

My theory is that the main motivation here is to reinstate the 18:9 unobstructed area that the notch previously provided and that the island is currently cutting into:

This may be an indication that the island will be less temporary than Apple initially planned, or else they should have done that from the beginning.
Exactly! I don’t know why this issue was never raised by the numerous apple blogs? The magic pill (as well as the “smaller” notch of the iPhone 12) both take more vertical space than all the other iPhones with notch (X, Xr, 11, 13). Is that what innovation is supposed to look like??

Display analyst Ross Young recently reported that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will see an increase in their display sizes compared to previous generations, growing to almost 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively.

An alleged CAD model of the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max (which could possibly be branded as iPhone 16 Ultra) was recently shared with 9to5Mac by Sonny Dickson and used to create renderings showing how much bigger Apple's largest iPhone model could be for the 2024 lineup.

According to the CAD model, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will apparently grow more significantly in the vertical dimension than in the horizontal dimension, compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The overall iPhone 16 Pro Max device height would increase by approximately 5 mm to ~165.0 mm while the width would only increase by about 0.5 mm to ~77.2 mm.

It's still very early in the rumor cycle for the iPhone 16 lineup as we're well over a year away from launch, so the accuracy of the leaked CAD model remains uncertain. We'll undoubtedly hear much more in the coming months, so we'll see if future information lines up with this early claim.

Uh, we need to discuss the word "significantly". 160mm -> 165mm is not really that "significant"

I really don't know what I'm going to do.

If these trends continue, soon there just won't be an iPhone for me. The iPhone 14 / 14 Pro is just too large for me and it's only a matter of time before it's the smallest iPhone Apple makes.
My plan right now is to cling tightly to my iPhone 13 mini with my tiny, tiny hands.

I was actually thinking about stocking a spare just in case- but most likely I'll just replace the battery through the iPhone repair/replacement service when the capacity degrades- it's $89 bucks.

The big worry will be when the phone starts getting slow with OS upgrades, or when the camera is noticeably behind the pack, but I think i'll likely be on this 13 mini phone through the iPhone 16 cycle at least at this rate given the announced products. Hopefully by the time they do the 17 line, they'll have a mini, or the SE will be decent enough to use as a replacement if my 13 breaks by then.

That theory makes sense, given that is what Apple did with the M2 MBA.

I still want wider, not taller, but if this is true I'm fine with it.

The A17 chip and periscope and titanium exterior will be too tempting to pass up this year. If those weren’t happening, I would skip for the iPhone 16 pro

Apple should sell the iPhones per/meter/inch so everyone could have their perfect size.

I would go for an iPhone Micro next time as I have iPad Mini for what many people use iPhones XL to.

Unknownz21 mentions that the iPhone 16 Pro will have 2 killer features so it may be worth skipping the 15 pro for the 16 pro

I imagine I’ll be in a 15 Pro Max for this years upgrade due to cameras after going down to a 14 Pro this year; been Plus/Max outside of X every year in upgrade program, but the smaller size is nicer than I recall. The ease of handling the 14 Pro after using it since September will be a bit tough to give up, so hopefully with 16 Pro rumored to get periscope, perhaps the cameras will be the same in each device again. A 6.3” 16 Pro albeit with the same camera system as 16 Pro Max might be my perfect size. Really don’t understand the need to make the thing even bigger at this point; feels more like marketing running out of ideas and playing the spec game. Even as a generally happy Max user all those years, I’d much rather they keep shrinking the bezels and making the current sizes easier to handle, or better yet, get back to 5.8”/6.5” in the slimmest chassis. The current Max is right on the edge of cumbersome in jeans pockets so going bigger just for a bit of height really seems a touch absurd, and again, feels like marketing reaching, no pun intende, but whamo!

It would be super cool if the iPhone Pro Max would finally support the Apple Pencil.

I would LOVE to see an image of those two phones next to the range of other iPhone sizes (6.1" 14 Pro, 5.8" iPhone X, 5.4" iPhone 13 mini, 4" iPhone 5, 3.5" iPhone 4S).

It's really ridiculous: the name, the characteristics, the idea that doing a bigger and more expensive crap all of a sudden makes it better, and passing on the idea that this is a development model.
Apple seems to me to be drifting in the Pacific.
I think I'm going to take a break from technology for an interval to be measured in decades, because I don't know what to do with Apple's competitors' products, and Apple products make me laugh so much that I would have a hard time using them even if they gave it to me.
I've been an Apple customer for decades, I've even lived through the era of clones. I haven't seen a similar rubbish produced by the company since the Quadra days..
I don’t know. My iPhone 13 pro is just about the best phone I have ever owned. It’s fast, good looking, pretty indestructible and lots of its hardware features are good enough to be generally useful rather than gimmicks, finally.

I’m pretty impressed with apples inhouse soc’s - in every catagory they play in where they have been released they more often than not blow the competition away. Watches, phones, tablets, laptops low to high end, desktops low to mid range - nothing is a slouch and nothing is particularly badly designed like has been in the past.

Drifting in the Pacific is quite a stretch.

Unless you’re basing your angst on a rumour of a phone that’s a little taller, in which case, I dunno.

Another inch and we have a IPhonePad mini.

6.9 an 8.3 are just about one inch away. Don't start counting chickens, please...
Well it’s more like 1.4 inches, and it’s a completely different aspect ratio. So it’s not really even nearly the same. You just have to look to see that.
Unless this is one of these fact bending type statements were ‘nearly’ means ‘exactly’ and therefore become true and any other explanation is poo pooed away as nonsense or counting chickens, whatever that means.

any idea why a 2:1 ratio is "special" compared to say a 16:9 ratio?
